Item Bringing archival collections to Wikipedia with the Remixing Archival Metadata Project (RAMP) editor(2017-07-03) Lemus-Rojas, Mairelys; Thompson, Timothy A.Wikipedia has been in existence for 16 years, but it was not until recently that GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) institutions started to see it as a trusted source and one they were interested in contributing to. Libraries and archives, in particular, have been slowly embracing the idea of contributing to Wikipedia, often motivated by the prospect of increasing the visibility and impact of their distinctive collections, which have been carefully curated by librarians and archivists alike. Different approaches have been taken by libraries and archives when it comes to contributing to Wikipedia. Some institutions have focused on adding links to Wikipedia articles in order to point back to their unique archival collections, whereas others have concentrated on enhancing the content of existing articles. Another way in which librarians and archivists can work together to share our collections is to collaborate on projects to enrich and repurpose the metadata that has already been created to describe them. The University of Miami Libraries took this approach and developed a tool to facilitate the creation of Wikipedia articles using relevant metadata from the libraries’ finding aids (documents that describe the scope, content, and context of archival collections). In this chapter, we will introduce the RAMP (Remixing Archival Metadata Project) editor and share our experience working on a pilot project conducted to test its viability.Item Bringing Wikipedia to IUPUI University Library: #1lib1ref Participation(2017-05-04) Lemus-Rojas, Mairelys; Odell, Jere D.A good Wikipedia article is one that contains citations to reliable sources so that readers can verify the information and find even more information related to that topic. Many Wikipedia articles, however, are missing a needed citation. For that reason, the Wikipedia Library came up with an initiative last year in an effort to bridge the citation gap. They launched the #1lib1ref campaign in January 15, 2016, which coincided with Wikipedia’s 15th birthday. The idea behind this global campaign was to encourage every librarian to provide Wikipedia with the gift of one citation to an article in need.1 The success of this initiative motivated the Wikipedia Library to host this event again in 2017 where a noticeable increase in participation was recorded. There was also an increase in the number of Wikipedia workshops and sessions held at libraries across the globe in order to provide new editors with the necessary tools to undertake the task of adding citations to the online encyclopedia. 2 Reflecting the library’s strong interest in supporting free access to quality information, IUPUI University Library was one of the institutions that participated in this effort.Item Building an on-RAMP to Wikipedia(The Wikipedia Library, 2015-04) Thompson, Timothy; Lemus-Rojas, MairelysItem Contributing Open Citations to Wikipedia: An OA Week OAbot Edit-A-Thon(InULA, 2017-11-29) Lemus-Rojas, Mairelys; Odell, Jere D.; University LibraryItem Contributing to the Portuguese Wikipedia with the Wikipedia Translation Project at Brown University(2024-06-11) Lemus-Rojas, Mairelys; Sobral, Patricia; Figueroa, PatriciaProviding equitable access to the consumption and creation of knowledge is at the core of organizations like the Wikimedia Foundation. Wikipedia, which is part of the ecosystem of open knowledge projects under the umbrella of Wikimedia, is available in over 300 languages. However, having this reach doesn’t mean all languages have the same coverage. With efforts underway carried out by the global community of users to try and mitigate the prevalent gender gap in the online encyclopedia, at Brown University, we have taken a step toward helping bridge the content and gender gap in the Portuguese-language version of Wikipedia. This is how the Wikipedia Translation Project was developed and has been implemented in the POBS 0400 course on Writing and Speaking Portuguese. The project mainly focuses on improving the coverage of those who lack representation, for example, women biographies in the Portuguese-language version of Wikipedia given that women biographies account for 20% of all biographies. In this presentation, we will share our experience in conceptualizing and implementing this project as well as its outcomes.Item Engaging the Central Indiana Museum Community with Wikipedia(2022-04-29) Sinclair, Katelynn; Odell, Jere D.Many museums and other cultural heritage institutions have discovered the value of including Wikipedia in their strategies for public engagement. When a potential patron has a question about an historical or cultural heritage site, they may use a search engine, or an artificial intelligence (AI) assistant such as Siri to learn more. They probably click on the first result, often Wikipedia, and use that as their source of information. Wikipedia, therefore, is a tool that connects communities to cultural heritage and museums can benefit from it. For example, museums with digital collections, like the Met and the Smithsonian, have contributed images to Wikimedia Commons (the image server for Wikipedia) to expand their public audience. Others have hosted events for patrons to edit Wikipedia using the historical resources available at the museum. Some have even created positions to host or employ a “Wikipedian in Residence.” These programs, however, place a burden on museum professionals who already have many new skills to learn and duties to maintain. Central Indiana’s cultural heritage organizations are no exception. By pooling expertise from IUPUI University Library and local Wikipedia experts, barriers to participation in Wikipedia’s open knowledge projects can be lowered. This paper describes a program in development to foster a community of practice in the central Indiana gallery, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAM) sector to support Wikipedia initiatives. The paper presents a community engagement plan to learn more from local museums professionals about their past, current, and future interests in Wikipedia collaborations. One outcome of this plan will be events and training opportunities for both museums professionals and their communities. These Wikipedia meetups, training sessions, and edit-a-thons will help people learn more about their museums, communities, and the use of Wikipedia as a non-profit, community-maintained information tool. Many people may be interested in learning how to edit Wikipedia entries, but could be intimidated by the learning curve. If central Indiana museum professionals participate in the program described in this paper–for example, by contributing historical resources and co-hosting editing events, Wikipedia’s coverage of related topics will improve and local museums will benefit from new connections with the public.Item Making IUPUI University Library’s Archival Collections More Accessible(InULA, 2018-11-29) Lemus-Rojas, Mairelys; White, AngelaItem Maximizing the use and exposure of archival authority data(2017-05-22) Lemus-Rojas, Mairelys; Thompson, TimothyIn the library profession, we have become increasingly aware of the benefits of creating and sharing authority data. More specifically, archivists have identified the need to have a standard structure that would make it possible to record and exchange information related to creators of archival materials. A group was formed to address this issue, and as a result the EAC-CPF standard emerged. EAC-CPF, an XML Schema, encodes contextual information about persons, corporate bodies, and families related to archival materials and is the basis for a new discovery system called SNAC (Social Networks & Archival Context). SNAC aims to provide a platform where resources from cultural heritage institutions around the world can be aggregated, which would make it easier to locate and discover archival materials. Having this unified access will be beneficial not only to participating institutions, but also to researchers because it will provide a global social network connecting the past to the present. With the idea of sharing archival data on a global scale, the Remixing Archival Metadata Project (RAMP) was developed. RAMP allows users to generate enhanced authority records for creators of archival collections and publish their content to the English Wikipedia through its API. By creating a Wikipedia entry using curated archival metadata, it is possible to actively shape the online encyclopedia with reliable information. This presentation will focus on how archival authority data is being used to build the SNAC discovery system and how librarians/archivists are actively taking advantage of their curated data to shape Wikipedia, one of the most used sites on the web.Item Maximizing the Use and Exposure of Archival Data through Linked Open Data(2018) Lemus-Rojas, Mairelys; Thompson, Timothy A.Item One Year In: Growing Capacity to Support GLAM Wiki in Indiana(2023-11-10) MacIsaac, Olivia; Flood, Jamie; Byrd-McDevitt, Dominic; Odell, Jere D.In 2022, in an effort funded by the Central Indiana Community Foundation, IUPUI University Library began focusing on efforts to leverage the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) to contribute cultural heritage images from Indiana Memory to Wikipedia and to increase community capacity for Wikipedia editing by providing a campaign of public programs, training, and outreach to selected cultural heritage organizations. Now that it has been a year, our project team is excited to share what worked, what didn’t work, and our plans to continue these efforts as we extend this project. In this session, our team will share: Benefits and barriers of the programming as expressed by participating GLAM organizations, Successful and less-successful outreach strategies, Improvements in Wikimedia content related to local efforts to promote diversity, equity and inclusion, New directions in our programming that respond to the challenges of supporting community-based initiatives during difficult times
