Item Developing a Research Mentorship Program: The American Society of Pediatric Nephrology's Experience(Frontiers, 2019-04-24) Vasylyeva, Tetyana L.; Díaz-González de Ferris, María E.; Hains, David S.; Ho, Jacqueline; Harshman, Lyndsay A.; Reidy, Kimberly J.; Brady, Tammy M.; Okamura, Daryl M.; Samsonov, Dmitry V.; Wenderfer, Scott E.; Hartung, Erum A.; Pediatrics, School of MedicineBackground: Most pediatric nephrologists work in academia. Mentor-mentee relationships provide support and guidance for successful research career. Mentorship program implementation is valuable in medical fields for providing research opportunities to young faculty. Methods: The American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ASPN) established a research mentorship program to (a) assist with matching of appropriate mentor-mentee dyads and (b) establish metrics for desirable mentor-mentee outcomes with two independent components: (1) the grants review workshop, a short-term program providing mentor feedback on grant proposals, and (2) the longitudinal program, establishing long-term mentor-mentee relationships. Regular surveys of both mentors and mentees were reviewed to evaluate and refine the program. Results: Twelve mentees and 17 mentors participated in the grant review workshop and 19 mentees were matched to mentors in the longitudinal program. A review of NIH RePORTER data indicated that since 2014, 13 NIH grants have been awarded. Mentees in the longitudinal program reported that the program helped most with identifying an outside mentor, improving grant research content, and with general career development. Mentors perceived themselves to be most helpful in assisting with overall career plans. Email communications were preferred over phone or face-to-face communications. Mentees endorsed strong interest in staying in touch with their mentors and 100% of mentors expressed their willingness to serve in the future. Conclusion: This mentorship program was initiated and supported by a relatively small medical society and has shown early success in cultivating mentoring relationships for a future generation of clinician-scientists.Item The Grimm Fairy Tales: An Analysis of Family and Society(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2016-04-08) Mohlke, MeganThe original Grimm Brothers' fairy tales aim to teach important morals about life, just like the Disney versions that we grew up with. However, these stories also show very common themes about the structures of family and society as a whole. To analyze how these themes are portrayed throughout the Grimm tales, I read the German versions of the fairy tales of Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Hansel and Gretel. In my honors project on these stories, I deduced that there is an emphasis on family structures and society's yearning for social mobility. These issues are mainly explained through the exaggerated portrayal of beauty, violence, poverty and wealth. Each story supports a common theme for family structure. The mothers, step mothers and women in general are often greedy and willing to do heinous things to achieve wealth and beauty. The fathers, although they mean well for their family, are very weak and submissive and thus make mistakes that often have grave consequences. As a result of the conflicts from the parental figures, the children are always the ones who suffer. Although they must encounter dangerous and chaotic situations, they are always successful in either saving themselves or being rescued by a prince. Many stories begin with starvation and poverty and progress to a successful ending of wealth and a higher social standing - usually as a result of marriage.Item Media Review: Sleep in Art: How Artists Portrayed Sleep and Dreams in the Last 7000 Years(American Academy of Sleep Medicine, 2021-12-01) Johal, Arminder; Stahl, Stephanie M.; Medicine, School of MedicineDr. Meir Kryger’s Sleep in Art: How Artists Portrayed Sleep and Dreams in the Last 7000 Years, published in 2019, is a book likely to captivate the interests of those in sleep medicine. The structure of the RICF is deliberately designed and normalized according to the Three Normal Forms. The database schema consists of three major themes: foundations’ basic organizational profile (i.e., basic profile, board member, supervisor, staff, and related party tables), program information (i.e., program information, major program, program relationship, and major recipient tables), and financial information (i.e., financial position, financial activities, cash flow, activity overview, and large donation tables). The RICF’s data quality can be measured by four criteria: data source reputation and credibility, completeness, accuracy, and timeliness. Data records are properly versioned, allowing verification and replication for research purposes.Item Something Small That Matters(American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2020-02) John, Chandy C.; Medicine, School of Medicine
