Item Region Report 2018: Balkan Countries(2018) Koeshall, NathanIn a region with the backdrop of variable levels of political and economic stability and a civil society sector still oriented towards foreign donations as the primary source of revenue, there is great potential for the emergence and further development of the nascent domestic philanthropy ecosystem in each country. However, there is an imbalanced legal and regulatory framework on paper and an inconsistent application of even the most progressive frameworks for philanthropy organizations in practice. With growing corporate and individual philanthropy in each economy over the past several years, the importance of philanthropy organizations advocating for improved frameworks and their implementation has begun to rise on the prioritization of these organizations’ advocacy agendas.Item Region Report 2018: Central Asia and South Caucasus(2018) Salibekova, RozaThe Central Asia and South Caucasus region for the Global Philanthropy Environment Index includes seven of the economies that were part of the Soviet Union before its disintegration in late 1991. The history of the region is tied to the evolution mainly of China and Japan. Japan established itself as a strong political and industrial state by the late 19th century. In 1937, Japan invaded China and during World War II, became an ally with Germany against the U.S. allies. After its defeat and massive devastation during WWII, Japan took nearly three decades to revive its economy and civil society. Hong Kong and Taiwan were part of the greater Chinese Empire under the Qing Dynasty. Hong Kong is now a special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China; however, it retains control over its political and economic systems independent from China. Taiwan is an island state in the East of China, annexed to the Chinese empire under the Qing Dynasty and later handed over to Japan in 1895. With the fall of Japan in World War II, Taiwan became part of the then Republic of China (ROC). The question of sovereignty of Taiwan is still an issue of political debate between Taiwan and China. Korea was under Japanese rule during 1905 -1945. At the end of World War II, the southern part of Korean Peninsula known as Korea established a democratic state, while a communist style government was established in North Korea.Item Region Report 2018: Latin America(2018) Evans, VanPolitical corruption, social inequality and informal employment are three of the most important challenges and obstacles for sustainable development in Latin American societies.Item Region Report 2018: Middle East and Northern Africa(2018) Hasan, SamiulThe Middle East and North Africa is a fluid transcontinental region comprising about twenty countries ranging from Morocco in the West, Iran in the East, Turkey in the North, and Yemen in the South.
