Item Parental factors associated with routine dental visits in American children(2018) Yepes, Juan F.; Gibson, Joe; Nuñez-Castorena, Jessica; Eckert, George; Maupomé, GerardoBackground: Various factors have been associated with children with relatively low use of dental care. These include lower level of parents’ education, poor diet, smoking at home, lower household income, lack of dental insurance, living in a rural location, and cognitive impairment or disability. Goal: To further identify and characterize parental factors related with reduced use of routine dental visits in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. Methods: Analyses of the 2012 Marion County Health Department survey were undertaken using multilevel logistic regression to assess the effect of individual and community variables on the probability of children’s use of routine dental visits. Results: Children from parents with a higher level of education, who did not smoke in the home, and families who ate fast food less often in the preceding 7 days, were more likely to have a routine dental visit in the prior 12 months. Conclusions: This study further delineates the complex associations between parental level factors and one important aspect of children’s oral health.Item Perceptions of communication, family adaptability and cohesion: a comparison of adolescents newly diagnosed with cancer and their parents(Walter de Gruyter GmbH, 2014) Phillips-Salimi, Celeste R.; Robb, Sheri L.; Monahan, Patrick O.; Dossey, Amy; Haase, Joan E.; School of NursingPURPOSE: To describe and compare adolescent and parent perspectives on communication, family adaptability and cohesion, as well as relationships among these variables, during the first month of an adolescent's cancer diagnosis. METHODS: Seventy adolescent-parent dyads were enrolled as part of a larger multi-site study. The adolescents ranged in age from 11 to 19, and 61% were males. Parents were predominately mothers (83%). Dyads were predominately non-Hispanic Caucasian (63%). Measures included the Parent-Adolescent Communication Scale and the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale (FACES II). Paired t-tests, Pearson correlations, intra-class correlation coefficients and multiple linear regression analyses were completed. RESULTS: Adolescent scores on communication, family adaptability and cohesion were significantly lower than parent scores. The inter-dyadic agreement between adolescents and parents was low. Communication, family adaptability and cohesion were examined separately for adolescents and for parents, and significant relationships were found. Both adolescent- and parent-perceived communication was significantly associated with family adaptability and cohesion outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Differences were found in adolescent and parent perceptions of communication, family adaptability and cohesion. When both adolescents and parents had better perceived communication, this was associated with better perceived family adaptability and cohesion. Results suggest that the development of interventions to enhance adolescent-parent communication could help foster better family adaptability and cohesion, which may ultimately impact their psychological adjustment. In addition, understanding the degree to which adolescents and parents disagree on their perceptions, including the results that parents generally have more favorable perceptions, may be a useful starting point when developing interventions.Item What can parents do? Examining the role of parental support on the negative relationship between racial discrimination, depression, and drug use among African American youth(Sage, 2016-07) Zapolski, Tamika C. B.; Fisher, Sycarah; Hsu, Wei-Wen; Barnes, Jessica; Psychology, School of ScienceAfrican American youth who experience racial discrimination are at heightened risk to use drugs as a coping response to distress. Based on the buffer-stress hypothesis, we proposed that parental support would attenuate this effect. Participants were 1,521 African American youth between 4th and 12th grade. As hypothesized, a mediation pathway was observed between racial discrimination, depression symptoms, and drug use. This effect was observed for both genders, although the pathway was partially mediated for males. Additionally, as hypothesized, parental support buffered the negative effect of depression symptomatology on drug use as a consequence of discrimination. Our findings highlight the impact racial discrimination has on health outcomes for African American youth and the importance of managing youth's emotional responses to discrimination. Moreover, findings illuminate the protective role of supportive parenting within the risk model and should thus be considered as an important component within prevention programming for this population of youth.
