Item Communities in Conflict: Memorializing Martin Luther King, Jr.(Indiana University, 2013-01-25) Ater, RenéeItem MLK Day and Racial Attitudes: Liking the Group More but Its Members Less(Wiley, 2015-10-01) Chopik, William J.; O'Brien, Ed; Konrath, Sara H.; Schwarz, NorbertIntuition suggests that the Martin Luther King holiday (MLK Day) should improve racial attitudes toward African Americans. However, its influence may depend on whether African Americans are evaluated as a group or individually. In two studies, we assessed racial attitudes either on MLK Day or on a control day. As might be expected, participants had more sympathetic attitudes towards African Americans as a group on MLK Day compared to control days; however, they evaluated individual African American exemplars more negatively on MLK Day compared to control days, who presumably seemed worse by comparison to the eminent political figure.Item What is the value of short? Exploring the benefits of episodic volunteer experiences for college students(IUPUI Center for Service and Learning, 2015-08-12) Hahn, Thomas W.; Hatcher, Julie A.; Norris, Kristin E.; Halford, JenniferThis exploratory study is designed to understand the civic outcomes (e.g., civic-mindedness, intentions to volunteer in the future, and intentions to donate money in the future) for college students who participate in a “Day of Service”. Understanding civic outcomes for college student episodic volunteers helps to justify the investment of staff time devoted to planning and implementing short-term volunteer events by both campus and community-based organizations.
