Item Developing an Evidence Based Dentistry Course for International Dentists(American Dental Education Association, 2023-03-12) Stone, Sean M.; Cho, SopanisThe International Dentist Program (IDP) matriculates dentists graduated from outside the United States through an accelerated 30-month version of the traditional DDS program. This poster presents the evolution of EBD education for IDPs that attempts to best integrate them with the regular DDS cohort while also addressing the demands of their unique schedule sand pedagogical needs.Item Inclusive Lab Space for International Dentist and Allied Dental Students(2023-10-25) Cho, Sopanis; Priest, Michelle; Stone, SeanStudents in the International Dentist Program (IDP) and Allied Dental Programs [Dental Assisting (DA) and Dental Hygiene (DH)] lack a space in the Dental School building to call “home”. Scheduling of laboratory, and didactic spaces for both DA and IDP specific courses is often challenging as the room scheduling for the traditional DDS courses takes priority. Because of this, DA and IDP students experience a diminished sense of belonging. The repurposing of an existing shared preclinical laboratory space to address unique needs of DA, DH, and IDP students will not only enhance their learning experiences, but also foster inclusivity and promote their sense of belonging at the schoolItem International Students’ Experiences Developing Leadership Capacity on Host Campuses(2018) Nguyễn, David Hòa KhoaResearch on international students is new and expanding, but few empirical studies have examined how student leadership theory impacts the educational success of international students. Student involvement (Kuh, 2001) and student leadership (Astin & Astin, 2000; Roberts, 2003) can have a positive effect on students’ academic and social outcomes on campus. Leadership capacity and efficacy are linked to important academic, career, and life benefits, such as career and leadership aspirations, work performance, the ability to cope and overcome stereotypes, and the adaptation to and persistence in the face of challenging situations (Day, Harrison, & Halpin, 2009; Machida & Schaubroeck, 2011). As a result, increasing student involvement opportunities for international students and engaging them in leadership opportunities on campus may not only increase their educational success and career aspirations, but it will also be critical to integrating them on campus and developing their own diverse perspectives. Adding the international student voice to the literature will help institutions understand their experiences and how administrators and professionals can further improve their collegiate experience.Item Knowing Me, Knowing You, Bringing International and Traditional Dental Students Together(American Dental Education Association, 2022-10-06) Cho, Sopanis; Mohammed, Muddasir; Stone, Sean M.The International Dentist Program (IDP) matriculates dentists graduated from outside the United States through an accelerated 30-month version of the traditional DDS program so that they can take board examinations and attain a U.S. DDS. As much as possible, IDP students study with cohorts of students in the traditional DDS program. This can prove challenging, however, as IDP students represent myriad differences in education, training, culture, and life experiences. Because of this, the early portion of the IDP curriculum ensures that student preclinical and other skills are equilibrated to similar levels so that they can effectively merge with their peers from the traditional DDS program. IDP students’ matriculation is staggered from traditional DDS students and when they join them as classmates the D2s have already spent one and a half years together forging relationships and adjusting to being dental students. Because of this and their diverse backgrounds, IDP’s have reported significant challenges that can hopefully be addressed by changing the climate with a program of improved communication and events.Item Serving International Students at IUPUI University Library(Indiana University Librarians Assocation, 2016-12-01) Maxson, Bronwen K.In the summer of 2015, three librarians and two library staff members formed an International Students Working Group at IUPUI University Library. All of us have international experience and want to serve our students. Our goal is to improve the experiences of international students at the library. Throughout the following year and a half, we have formed connections across campus to facilitate professional development opportunities, participate in campus events, and create some of our own initiatives. We did not accomplish all of our goals, but we are still planning to continue our efforts.
