Item Augmenting the Health Belief Model to Promote Knee Massage as Self-Management Among Individuals with Knee Osteoarthritis: A Roadmap for Future Research and Intervention Development(2023-08) Nemati, Raheleh; Munk, Niki; Kaushal, Navin; Keith, NiCole; Naugle, KellySelf-administered massage is a form of self-management that has been shown to alleviate symptoms among individuals with knee osteoarthritis. However, existing interventions have yielded inconsistent results in terms of promoting the practice of self-administered massage, highlighting a critical gap in the application of a theoretical or conceptual model. The current study utilized an expanded health belief model that integrates constructs from the theory of planned behavior aimed to identify the behavioral determinants associated with the practice of self-administered knee massage. An observational study was designed to address the objectives using an online survey. A total of 268 participants with knee osteoarthritis completed the survey. Data regarding the clinical characteristics of participants, including the year of diagnosis, chronicity of pain, affected knee(s), and the intensity of pain in terms of current, average, and worst levels, were collected. Structural equation modeling was used to test the predictive validity of the proposed model. The model revealed self-administered massage behavior to be predicted by intention (β = .21, p < .014). Intention was predicted by cues (β = .29, p <.001), task self-efficacy (β = .29, p <.001), affective attitudes (β = .14, p =.011), perceived severity (β = .27, p <.001), and perceived facilitators (β = .22, p <.001), but not response self-efficacy, instrumental attitudes, or barriers. Intention mediated the effects between cues (β = .06, 95% CI .025, .129) and perceived severity (β = .06, 95% CI .014, .127) and behavior. Model determinants were found to mediate between age and behavior (β = -.16, 95% CI -.224, -.093). Interventions aimed at promoting self-administered massage should focus on enhancing individuals' perception of the severity of their knee OA progression and their confidence in performing the massage by teaching them the common massage techniques.Item Impact of a multimedia educational tool incorporating theoretical and mixed methods on the fruit and vegetable intakes of middle school children(2017-12-11) Whelan, JoAnne Louise; Arnold, Brent; Ernst, Judith; Staten, Lisa; Magee, PaulaIn the United States, over 30 percent of children are categorized as overweight or obese. Comorbid conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and other health complications related to obesity, are also on the rise. This public health issue is often related to disproportionate dietary intake and lack of physical activity. Efforts that promote fruits and vegetables (F/V) as preferred food choices over high fat and high sugar foods may help combat the increasing incidence of overweight and obesity. Other benefits from F/V include prebiotics or fiber that helps to create and maintain a healthy microbiota, which is now recognized as essential for long-term positive health outcomes. Many children, however, fall short in consuming the recommended daily amounts of F/V servings, and therefore, lack key nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and fiber. This study is a pilot, quasi-experimental design that provides information related to the importance of eating F/V to children, ages 11-12 years, who attend a parochial school in Indianapolis, Indiana. The data from this study describe the amounts of F/V servings in home-prepared school lunches. The primary aim of this study is to determine if eight interactive multimedia lessons and activities delivered to one group of students (intervention) and a single lesson delivered to a different group of students in the same school and grade (control), affects the amount of lunch F/V servings, student knowledge, attitude, and self-efficacy/perception. This baseline data will contribute to the design and implementation of a health curriculum for middle school age students. Focus groups, adapted validated assessment tools as well as the on-site observation of F/V servings brought in lunches and consumed at lunch are compared between both groups to document any effects of the instruction. The results show that a statistically significant change in knowledge occurred within the intervention group following the implementation of this F/V education series. Favorable findings, with a positive upward trend in relative amounts of F/V, were identified and more research in this area is warranted.Item A qualitative analysis of calorie menu labeling: Point of sale conversations with cashiers at fast-casual retsaurants(2015-05) Bechtel, Kimberly; Parrish-Sprowl, John; Goering, Elizabeth M.; Sandwina, Ronald M.The study was conducted to examine the communication between the customer and the cashier at the point of purchase in the process of determining the impact of the labeling laws. This study used an inductive qualitative design for data collection and data analysis. Data from this study suggest that calorie counts on menu labels are discussed frequently between the customer and the cashier at the point of sale at fast-casual restaurants. The data found gives us a framework and rationale as to why previous research on the effectiveness of the calorie labeling law in the Affordable Care Act have yet to make a significant impact in reducing consumer’s total daily caloric intake when eating food away from the home and found three specific reasons as to why the calorie labeling law may not be working the way the government intended it to. First, consumers at fast-casual restaurants rely on the cashiers as calorie guides because they are not aware or knowledgeable about the recommended daily caloric intake and often underestimate the total calories in their meals. Secondly, the study’s findings indicate that when restaurants offer lower calorie choices and downsizing options like a “small pita” at Pita Pit instead of a “regular pita”, many consumers buy the downsized item or smaller portion but food chains are not downsizing their signature items. Third, the study examined if the cashiers are trained in any way to discuss new regulations and calorie count/nutritional value and not one cashier was trained specifically about the calorie labeling law and why certain foods on the menu have more calories than others even though they are influencing decision making. Conversations at the point of sale have been routinely ignored in research about the calorie labeling law and this research helps to understand the choices consumers are making with the newly implemented calorie labeling regulation. The results from this study helps us further advance our understanding as to why consumers make the food choices they do while eating at restaurants.Item Translation, Adaptation, and Validation of the Modified Thai Version of Champion’s Health Belief Model Scale (MT-CHBMS)(MDPI, 2022-12-31) Suriyong, Patinya; Jiraniramai, Surin; Wongpakaran, Nahathai; Pinyopornpanish, Kanokporn; Angkurawaranon, Chaisiri; Jiraporncharoen, Wichuda; Champion, Victoria L.; Wongpakaran, Tinakon; School of NursingBackground: While breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among Thai women, breast self-examination (BSE), mammography, and ultrasound use are still underutilized. There is a need to assess women’s beliefs about breast cancer and screening in different cultural settings. As a result, a tool to measure the beliefs that influence breast-cancer-screening practices is needed. Champion’s Health Belief Model Scale (CHBMS) is a valid and reliable tool for assessing individuals’ attitudes toward breast cancer and screening methods, but it has not been validated in Thai women. The study aimed to translate and validate the CHBMS for breast self-examination and mammography among Thai women and to modify the original scale by adding ultrasound items for breast cancer screening. In addition, the purpose of this study was to create a modified Thai version of the CHBMS which could be used to better understand patients’ beliefs regarding breast cancer screening in Thailand, in order to develop practical and effective interventions suited to their beliefs. Methods: The CHBMS was translated into Thai, validated by a panel of experts, back-translated, modified by adding content about ultrasound for screening breast cancer, and pretested. Confirmatory factor analysis was used with a sample of 130 Thai women aged 40 to 70 years old. Result: The final MT-CHBMS consisted of 64 items determining ten subscales: susceptibility, seriousness, benefits—breast self-examination, benefits—mammogram, barriers—BSE, barriers—mammogram, confidence, health motivation, benefits—ultrasound, and barriers—ultrasound. The MT-CHBMS demonstrated excellent internal consistency. The ten-factor model was best fitted to the data. Conclusion: The MT-CHBMS was found to be a reliable and valid tool for measuring individuals’ attitudes toward breast cancer and screening methods. The scale could be easily used by healthcare providers to determine the beliefs before planning appropriate interventions to increase early detection.Item Travel despite the COVID-19 pandemic: Implications for tourism recovery(Frontiers Media, 2022-10-05) Liu, Hongbo; Liu-Lastres, Bingjie; Zeng, Li; Donohoe, Holly; Tourism, Event, & Sport Management, School of Health and Human SciencesThe COVID-19 pandemic has devastated the global tourism industry. This study explores why some Chinese residents travel during the pandemic. A mixed-methods research design was adopted, guided by the health belief model and relevant literature. Through 21 interviews with Chinese tourists who took an overnight leisure trip in May 2020, and a national survey among Chinese residents, this study explored factors influencing Chinese residents' travel-related decisions and behaviors during the pandemic. Results outline the influences of health beliefs, government trust, past travel experience, and psychological capital on tourists' risk-reduction behaviors. Theoretical and practical implications are provided regarding tourism recovery during pandemics.
