Accelerating complex modeling workflows in CyberWater using on-demand HPC/Cloud resources
(IEEE, 2021-09) Li, Feng; Chen, Ranran; Fu, Yuankun; Song, Fengguang; Liang, Yao; Ranawaka, Isuru; Pamidighantam, Sudhakar; Luna, Daniel; Liang, Xu; Computer Information and Graphics Technology, School of Engineering and Technology
Workflow management systems (WMSs) are commonly used to organize/automate sequences of tasks as workflows to accelerate scientific discoveries. During complex workflow modeling, a local interactive workflow environment is desirable, as users usually rely on their rich, local environments for fast prototyping and refinements before they consider using more powerful computing resources. However, existing WMSs do not simultaneously support local interactive workflow environments and HPC resources. In this paper, we present an on-demand access mechanism to remote HPC resources from desktop/laptop-based workflow management software to compose, monitor and analyze scientific workflows in the CyberWater project. Cyber-Water is an open-data and open-modeling software framework for environmental and water communities. In this work, we extend the open-model, open-data design of CyberWater with on-demand HPC accessing capacity. In particular, we design and implement the LaunchAgent library, which can be integrated into the local desktop environment to allow on-demand usage of remote resources for hydrology-related workflows. LaunchAgent manages authentication to remote resources, prepares the computationally-intensive or data-intensive tasks as batch jobs, submits jobs to remote resources, and monitors the quality of services for the users. LaunchAgent interacts seamlessly with other existing components in CyberWater, which is now able to provide advantages of both feature-rich desktop software experience and increased computation power through on-demand HPC/Cloud usage. In our evaluations, we demonstrate how a hydrology workflow that consists of both local and remote tasks can be constructed and show that the added on-demand HPC/Cloud usage helps speeding up hydrology workflows while allowing intuitive workflow configurations and execution using a desktop graphical user interface.

Advancing Systems Biology in the International Conference on Intelligent Biology and Medicine (ICIBM) 2015
(BioMed Central, 2016-08-26) Zhao, Zhongming; Liu, Yunlong; Huang, Yufei; Huang, Kun; Ruan, Jianhua; Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics, IU School of Medicine
The 2015 International Conference on Intelligent Biology and Medicine (ICIBM 2015) was held on November 13-15, 2015 in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. ICIBM 2015 included eight scientific sessions, three tutorial sessions, one poster session, and four keynote presentations that covered the frontier research in broad areas related to bioinformatics, systems biology, big data science, biomedical informatics, pharmacogenomics, and intelligent computing. Here, we present a summary of the 10 research articles that were selected from ICIBM 2015 and included in the supplement to BMC Systems Biology.

Adversarial Dual Distinct Classifiers for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation
(IEEE, 2021) Jing, Taotao; Ding, Zhengming; Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Engineering and Technology
Unsupervised Domain adaptation (UDA) attempts to recognize the unlabeled target samples by building a learning model from a differently-distributed labeled source domain. Conventional UDA concentrates on extracting domain-invariant features through deep adversarial networks. However, most of them seek to match the different domain feature distributions, without considering the task-specific decision boundaries across various classes. In this paper, we propose a novel Adversarial Dual Distinct Classifiers Network (AD 2 CN) to align the source and target domain data distribution simultaneously with matching task-specific category boundaries. To be specific, a domain-invariant feature generator is exploited to embed the source and target data into a latent common space with the guidance of discriminative cross-domain alignment. Moreover, we naturally design two different structure classifiers to identify the unlabeled target samples over the supervision of the labeled source domain data. Such dual distinct classifiers with various architectures can capture diverse knowledge of the target data structure from different perspectives. Extensive experimental results on several cross-domain visual benchmarks prove the model's effectiveness by comparing it with other state-of-the-art UDA.

Beyond the Conference: Health Sciences Librarians’ Motivations for Publishing
    (2023-03) Hinrichs, Rachel J.
Introduction: Previous studies have found that only 21.8% to 28% of abstracts presented at the annual Medical Library Association (MLA) conferences are later published as journal articles. What motivates health sciences librarians to take the next step in publishing and disseminating their work? This study will answer the following questions: 1) Are librarians presenting at MLA conferences more motivated to publish due to internal motivational factors (e.g., “to build a professional reputation for myself”), external motivational factors (e.g., “I am expected to participate in research for my job”), or a mix of both? 2) Do motivations for publication differ between academic and hospital librarians? 3) Do motivations for publication differ between those who published in peer-reviewed journals and those who published in other venues? Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, the team surveyed first authors of abstracts presented at the MLA conferences in 2012 and 2014 to determine if they later published their work in any full-text format. If they did publish, the team asked authors where their work was published and the primary and secondary reasons for pursuing publication. The reasons for publication included internal and external motivational factors identified from the library science literature. Chi-square tests were used to assess differences in motivation. Results: One hundred and sixty one authors responded to the survey, and of these, 49 authors reported that they had published their abstract(s). Fifty-one percent (n=25) of respondents selected only internal motivational factors, 18.4% (n=9) selected only external motivational factors, and 30.6% (n=15) reported a mix of both. The author found no statistically significant differences between hospital and academic librarians, or those who published in peer-reviewed journals versus other venues. Discussion: Findings indicate that librarians who chose to publish their work after presenting at annual MLA conferences are primarily motivated to publish due to internal factors. Interventions designed to encourage MLA presenters to publish their work should consider ways to cultivate presenters’ internal motivation.

Implementation and Performance Evaluation of In-vehicle Highway Back-of-Queue Alerting System Using the Driving Simulator
(IEEE Xplore, 2021-09) Zhang, Zhengming; Shen, Dan; Tian, Renran; Li, Lingxi; Chen, Yaobin; Sturdevant, Jim; Cox, Ed; Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Engineering and Technology
This paper proposes a prototype in-vehicle highway back-of-queue alerting system that is based on an Android-based smartphone app, which is capable of delivering warning information to on-road drivers approaching traffic queues. To evaluate the effectiveness of this alerting system, subjects were recruited to participate in the designed test scenarios on a driving simulator. The test scenarios include three warning types (no alerts, roadside alerts, and in-vehicle auditory alerts), three driver states (normal, distracted, and drowsy), and two weather conditions (sunny and foggy). Driver responses related to vehicle dynamics data were collected and analyzed. The results indicate that on average, the drowsy state decreases the minimum time-to-collision by 1.6 seconds compared to the normal state. In-vehicle auditory alerts can effectively increase the driving safety across different combinations of situations (driver states and weather conditions), while roadside alerts perform better than no alerts.
