Stabilizing Behavioral Improvements and Preventing Readmission Cycles in Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Advancing Healthcare Outcomes in Inpatient Settings
(2022-08) Bomma, Vijayani; Neal, Tiffany; Swiezy, Naomi
Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often require structured inpatient services to stabilize complex behavioral and psychiatric needs. This practicum at HANDS in Autism®, in collaboration with the Indiana NeuroDiagnostic Institute (NDI), focused on supporting post-discharge stability and reducing readmissions through data-driven implementation of evidence-based practices (EBPs). Patient-level data were extracted from the Cerner electronic medical record system, aligned with the Aberrant Behavior Checklist (ABC) and Clinical Global Impression (CGI) scales, and harmonized for analysis. Using REDCap, R Studio, and Excel, data were categorized and visualized to identify trends and support individualized planning. Findings support the utility of standardized behavioral assessment tools and structured data workflows to guide long-term support planning and enhance clinical decision-making. This project contributes to the development of scalable, collaborative models for improving healthcare outcomes and continuity of care for youth with ASD in psychiatric settings.
