Item Change and Transition in Public Services(ACRL, 1997) Lewis, David W.Academic libraries and, more important, all of higher education have been in the midst of a fundamental transformation over the past decade. Changes in information technology, requirements for increased accountability from stakeholder groups, and pressures to accomplish more with fewer resources have combined to produce a period of organizational restructurings that will require librarians to reshape their professional identities and roles.Item The digital ecologies of Korean college students: An exploration of digital self-directed learning(2018) Briggs, Neil; Sherman, BrandonThe wealth of readily available online digital English language learning resources presents vast opportunities for students to engage in self-directed language learning. The extent to which such resources are known to students, however, let alone how they are being utilized, typically remains largely unknown to teachers. In order to design a curriculum that maximizes student learning opportunities by guiding them towards online digital resources that afford self-directed learning, it is essential for teachers to first develop an intimate understanding of the students’ relationships with such resources. This may include awareness, patterns of use, and the variables that constrain them from using the resources more extensively. To accomplish this objective, the Self-Directed Digital Study Instrument (SDDSI) was developed and implemented to survey 197 Korean college students. While the results of this study are indicative of a reality in which digital resources are being underused, they also point towards an area of great potential for pedagogical change in Korean post-secondary English learning education. In contrast to the traditional pedagogical model, the results suggest that self-directed learning or even self-determined learning models, facilitated via various digital resources, can present students with opportunities for more deeply engaging, individualized, and self-directed approaches to language learning.Item Implementing Intelligence-Led Policing: An Application of Loose-Coupling Theory(Elsevier, 2014) Carter, Jeremy G.; Phillips, Scott W.; Gayadeen, S. MarlonPurpose: This research is intended to inform a knowledge gap in the literature and present the first national findings related to intelligence-led policing adoption among state and local agencies. Specific practices are identified to inform scholars and practitioners regarding intelligence-led policing behaviors. Methods: Original survey research from a federally-funded project is gleaned to explore intelligence-led policing adoption through a loose-coupling theoretical perspective. Negative binomial and logistic regression models are employed to identify predictive relationships. Results: Agencies nationwide appear to be closely following the National Criminal Intelligence Sharing Plan recommendations to enhance information sharing. Consistent with the Department of Homeland Security’s Target Capabilities List is also observed. Agency size appears to have a significant effect on key organizational information sharing behaviors. The findings are tempered due to limitations in the research design. Conclusions: Local agencies appear to be tightly-coupled with the recommendations put forth in the National Criminal Intelligence Sharing Plan in their efforts to adopt intelligence-led policing. Agency size appears to enhance adoption across most dependent metrics. This research progresses the limited evidence base and progress regarding this emerging policing philosophy.Item The Innovator's Dilemma: Disruptive Change and Academic Libraries(Library Administration & Management, 2004) Lewis, David W.Using the concepts in Clayton Christensen's book The Innovator's Dilemma, the current situation of academic librries is reviewed. It is argued that academic libraries are the types of institutions that Christensen predicts will fail as they confront the distruptive change that they are facing.Item Reorganizing Libraries to Meet Tomorrow’s Needs(2002) Lewis, David W.Using the work of Michael Buckland, Evans and Wurster, and Clayton M. Christensen the presentation explores the nature of library organizations including their structure and functions, and proposes a strategy for libraries to confront the disruptive changes they will certainly face.
