Item A systematic review of the reasons for quitting and/or reducing alcohol among those who have received alcohol use disorder treatment(Elsevier, 2024-11-19) Prestigiacomo, Christiana; Fisher-Fox, Lindsey; Cyders, Melissa A.; Psychology, School of ScienceResearch has primarily studied reasons for quitting and/or reducing alcohol use in non-treatment samples. This systematic review aimed to characterize the reasons for quitting and/or reducing alcohol use among those who have received treatment for AUD and examine how reasons endorsed differ across measurement methods used. Articles were identified through PsycINFO, Web of Science, PubMed, and CINAHL. Twenty-one articles met inclusion criteria. Thematic coding revealed 21 unique themes in reasons for quitting and/or reducing. Common reasons included physical health issues, misalignment with personal goals, family influence, and social factors-also noted in non-treatment populations. Unique themes like hitting rock bottom and avoiding disapproval were identified, potentially linked to treatment initiation or development. The measurement approach influenced the reasons reported, highlighting the need for standardized methods. Common reasons are fundamental and are not a result of treatment, while others are unique to individuals who have received AUD treatment, which may suggest that they are critical in leading one to seek treatment or may be developed during treatment. Assessing and tailoring treatment based on these reasons may enhance outcomes. Standardizing how we measure reasons for quitting or reducing alcohol is crucial for comparing studies and improving treatment. Future research should evaluate reasons over time, assess their importance at different treatment stages, and use varied assessment strategies for comprehensive insights.Item Abstinence and abstinence-only education(Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins, 2007-10) Ott, Mary A.; Santelli, John S.; Pediatrics, School of MedicinePURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent literature on medical accuracy, program effectiveness, and ethical concerns related to abstinence-only policies for adolescent sexuality education. RECENT FINDINGS: The federal government invests over 175 million dollars annually in 'abstinence-only-until-marriage' programs. These programs are required to withhold information on contraception and condom use, except for information on failure rates. Abstinence-only curricula have been found to contain scientifically inaccurate information, distorting data on topics such as condom efficacy, and promote gender stereotypes. An independent evaluation of the federal program, several systematic reviews, and cohort data from population-based surveys find little evidence of efficacy and evidence of possible harm. In contrast, comprehensive sexuality education programs have been found to help teens delay initiation of intercourse and reduce sexual risk behaviors. Abstinence-only policies violate the human rights of adolescents because they withhold potentially life-saving information on HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. SUMMARY: Federal support of abstinence-only as an approach to adolescent sexuality education is of much concern due to medical inaccuracies, lack of effectiveness, and the withholding and distorting of health information.Item Cerebrovascular Injury After Serial Exposure to Chronic Stress and Abstinence from Methamphetamine Self-Administration(Nature Publishing Group, 2018-07-12) Natarajan, Reka; Mitchell, Carmen M.; Harless, Nicole; Yamamoto, Bryan K.; Pharmacology and Toxicology, School of MedicineCerebrovascular damage caused by either exposure to stress or the widely abused drug, methamphetamine (Meth) is known but stress and drug abuse frequently occur in tandem that may impact their individual cerebrovascular effects. This study examined their co-morbid cerebrovascular effects during abstinence from self-administered Meth after the exposure to chronic unpredictable stress (CUS). Exposure to CUS prior to unrestricted Meth self-administration had no effect on Meth intake in rats; however, the pro-inflammatory mediator cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and the breakdown of cell-matrix adhesion protein β-dystroglycan in isolated cerebral cortical capillaries were increased after 3 days of abstinence and persisted for 7 days. These changes preceded decreases in occludin, a key structural protein component of the blood-brain barrier. The decrease in occludin was blocked by the COX-2 specific inhibitor nimesulide treatment during abstinence from Meth. The changes in COX-2, β-dystroglycan, and occludin were only evident following the serial exposure to stress and Meth but not after either one alone. These results suggest that stress and voluntary Meth intake can synergize and disrupt cerebrovasculature in a time-dependent manner during abstinence from chronic stress and Meth. Furthermore, COX-2 inhibition may be a viable pharmacological intervention to block vascular changes after Meth exposure.Item Long-Term Alcohol Drinking Reduces the Efficacy of Forced Abstinence and Conditioned Taste Aversion in Crossed High-Alcohol-Preferring Mice(Wiley, 2016-07) O’Tousa, David Scott; Grahame, Nicholas Joseph; Psychology, School of ScienceBACKGROUND: Negative outcomes of alcoholism are progressively more severe as the duration of problem of alcohol use increases. Additionally, alcoholics demonstrate tendencies to neglect negative consequences associated with drinking and/or to choose to drink in the immediate presence of warning factors against drinking. The recently derived crossed high-alcohol-preferring (cHAP) mice, which volitionally drink to heavier intoxication (as assessed by blood ethanol [EtOH] concentration) than other alcohol-preferring populations, as well as spontaneously escalating their intake, may be a candidate to explore mechanisms underlying long-term excessive drinking. Here, we hypothesized that an extended drinking history would reduce the ability of 2 manipulations (forced abstinence [FA] and conditioned taste aversion [CTA]) to attenuate drinking. METHODS: Experiment 1 examined differences between groups drinking for either 14 or 35 days, half of each subjected to 7 days of FA and half not, to characterize the potential changes in postabstinence drinking resulting from an extended drinking history. Experiment 2 used a CTA procedure to assess stimulus specificity of the ability of an aversive flavorant to decrease alcohol consumption. Experiment 3 used this taste aversion procedure to assess differences among groups drinking for 1, 14, or 35 days in their propensity to overcome this aversion when the flavorant was mixed with either EtOH or water. RESULTS: Experiment 1 demonstrated that although FA decreased alcohol consumption in mice with a 14-day drinking history, it failed to do so in mice drinking alcohol for 35 days. Experiment 2 showed that the addition of a flavorant only suppressed alcohol drinking if an aversion to the flavorant was previously established. Experiment 3 demonstrated that an extended drinking history expedited extinction of suppressed alcohol intake caused by a conditioned aversive flavor. CONCLUSIONS: These data show that a history of long-term drinking in cHAP mice attenuates the efficacy of interventions that normally reduce drinking. Analogous to alcoholics who may encounter difficulties in limiting their intake, cHAP mice with long drinking histories are relatively insensitive to both abstinence and signals of harmful consequences. We propose that the cHAP line may be a valid model for adaptations that occur following the extended heavy alcohol drinking.Item Methamphetamine-induced deficits in social interaction are not observed following abstinence from single or repeated exposures(Wolters Kluwer, 2015-12) Janetsian, Sarine S.; McCane, Aqilah M.; Linsenbardt, David N.; Lapish, Christopher C.; Department of Psychology, School of ScienceThe purpose of the current study was to assess social interaction (SI) following acute and repeated methamphetamine (MA) administration. Rats were injected with 5.0 mg/kg of MA and SI was tested 30 minutes or 24 hours later. In another group of animals, MA sensitization was induced using 5.0 mg/kg of MA, and SI was assessed after one day or thirty days of abstinence. SI was reduced in rats injected with MA 30 minutes, but not 24 hours, prior to testing, compared with saline controls. Impaired SI was observed in combination with active avoidance of the conspecific animal. Repeated injections of MA progressively reduced locomotor activity and increased stereotypy, indicating that animals were sensitized. However, no differences in SI were observed 24 hours or 30 days following the induction of sensitization. The absence of detectable differences in SI following MA sensitization may be attributable to the relatively short regimen used to induce sensitization. However, the current series of experiments provides evidence that an acute injection of MA decreases SI and simultaneously increases avoidance behavior, which supports a link between psychostimulant use and impaired social functioning. These data suggest that the acute injection model may provide a useful model to explore the neural basis of impaired social functioning and antisocial behavior.Item Roflumilast Treatment During Forced Abstinence Reduces Relapse to Methamphetamine Seeking and Taking(Wiley, 2022) Baek, James J.; Kline, Hannah; Deveau, Carmen M.; Yamamoto, Bryan K.; Pharmacology and Toxicology, School of MedicineMethamphetamine (METH) is a psychostimulant with high abuse potential. Currently there are no pharmacological treatments specific for METH abuse or stimulant use disorder generally. Although phosphodiesterase inhibitors have shown some promise, current animal models have not examined their use in abstinence from stimulant abuse. We employed a METH self-administration model in the rat followed by a forced abstinence period during which roflumilast, a phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor, was administered. A detailed behavioral analysis of chronic treatment with roflumilast during 7 days of forced abstinence showed that roflumilast reduced METH seeking and METH taking upon subsequent relapse test. Roflumilast treatment during 7 days of forced abstinence did not affect sucrose seeking and sucrose taking behaviors. These data suggest that roflumilast may be a treatment for METH use disorder that is effective when administered only during abstinence.
