Item 975 ABO blood group, rhesus type and risk of COVID-19 in pregnant women(Elsevier, 2021) Ibrahim, Sherrine A.; Boudova, Sarah; Rouse, Caroline E.; Shanks, Anthony L.; Reinhardt, Jeffrey; Scifres, Christina; Haas, David M.; Peipert, Jeffrey F.; Tuuli, Methodius G.; Obstetrics and Gynecology, School of MedicineObjective: There is controversy regarding the association of ABO blood group, Rhesus (Rh) type and risk of COVID-19. We tested the hypothesis that ABO blood group and Rh type are associated with COVID-19 diagnosis and symptoms during pregnancy. Study Design: Retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from two labor and delivery units with universal SARS-CoV-2 testing policy between March 1 and May 31, 2020. All pregnant women tested during the study period were eligible. The primary outcome was COVID-19 diagnosis. Secondary outcomes were measures of COVID-19 severity, including symptoms, ICU admission, respiratory support and treatment for COVID-19. Outcomes were compared across ABO blood groups. Women with blood group O or Rh positive blood type were compared with non-O groups and Rh negative, respectively, using univariable and multivariable analyses. Results: Of 586 pregnant women tested, 66 (11.3%) were positive. The most common ABO blood group in the cohort was O (52.2%) and 87.4% were Rh positive. Rates of the primary outcome, COVID-19 diagnosis, were not significantly different across ABO blood groups (P=0.47). There were also no significant differences in measures of COVID-19 severity among blood groups (Table). Compared to other blood groups, the risk of COVID-19 diagnosis was not significantly different in women with group O (13.1% vs 9.3%, adjusted OR 1.43; 95% CI 0.84, 2.4). Rh positive women were at a significantly higher risk of COVID-19 diagnosis (12.3% vs 4.1%, adjusted OR 3.38; 95% CI 1.03, 11.07) and a non-significant increased risk of symptoms (6.8% vs 2.7%, adjusted OR 2.67; 95% CI 0.63, 11.32), after adjusting for ABO blood group (Figure). Conclusion: We found no association between ABO blood group and diagnosis or severity of COVID-19 in pregnant women. However, Rhesus positive women may be at a higher risk of COVID-19.Item Pancreas transplantation using compatible but non‐identical ABO blood group donors(Wiley, 2018) Nagaraju, Santosh; Mangus, Richard S.; Powelson, John A.; Fridell, Jonathan A.; Surgery, School of MedicineMethods A review of all pancreas transplants from a single institution from 01/2003 to 07/2016 (n=606) revealed 41 recipients of a NIC donor pancreas which were matched for age, race, gender, year and type of transplant with 41 ABO identical cases. Groups were compared for allograft survival, incidence of acute cellular rejection (ACR), length of hospital stay, 3‐month readmissions and transfusion requirements. Serum haptoglobin and Lactate dehydrogenase were used to identify hemolysis in patients requiring repeated transfusions without overt blood loss. Results The 1‐year graft survival was 100% and 88% in the study and control groups. In the study group, 6/41(14%) developed hemolysis, all of which were ABO O into A. All responded to donor blood type specific transfusions. Discussion There are limited data on outcomes of solid organ transplant using NIC donors with almost none specifically addressing pancreas transplantation. In this study, graft survival was similar but 14% developed hemolysis, which was transient and treated with transfusion of donor blood type specific blood. Conclusion NIC pancreas transplants have similar graft survival compared to ABO identical. Hemolysis may occur so some caution is required.Item The prognostic value of circulating lymphocyte counts and ABO blood group in lung cancer stereotactic body radiation therapy: a retrospective study(AME, 2022) Chen, Meng; Chen, Kuifei; Li, Shuling; Meng, Yinnan; Shi, Yangyang; Chen, Xiaofeng; Yang, Haihua; Radiation Oncology, School of MedicineBackground: Clinically, there is a lack of simple and feasible indicators to predict the efficacy of stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). Circulating lymphocyte counts (CLCs) is considered to be related to curative effect in conventional radiotherapy of lung cancer, and blood groups are also associated with the survival. In this study, we investigate the prognostic value of CLCs and ABO blood groups in lung cancer patients treated with SBRT. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 191 patients who were treated with lung cancer SBRT in Taizhou Hospital of Zhejiang Province from September 2014 to December 2018. The medical record system of Taizhou Hospital was used to collect relevant clinical data, such as stage, CLC, ABO blood groups and other important clinical co-variates. The effects of SBRT were evaluated by patient reexamination image data and telephone follow-up. The RECIST 1.1 standard was used to evaluate the short-term efficacy in the first, third, and sixth months after SBRT. Progression-free survival (PFS) was defined as the time from the day of SBRT to disease progression or death from any cause. Overall survival (OS) was measured from the day of SBRT until the last follow-up or death. Survival curves and univariate, multivariate logistic-regression analyses were used to expound the prognostic factors for local control (LC), PFS, and OS of lung cancer SBRT patients. Results: Univariate and multivariate analysis results showed that post-SBRT CLCs were independent factors for the short-term efficacy 3 and 6 months after lung cancer SBRT [hazard ratio (HR) =0.249, P=0.037; HR =0.347, P=0.012]. Survival analyses showed that the PFS and OS of lung cancer SBRT patients with A blood type was significantly shorter than that in the other three non-A blood groups (PFS: 6.5 vs. 10 months, HR =1.535, P=0.020; OS: 24 vs. 41 months, HR =1.578, P=0.048). Moreover, the patients with high post-SBRT CLCs in the non-A blood group had the longest PFS and OS after lung cancer SBRT (HR =0.551, P=0.043). Conclusions: Lung cancer SBRT patients with high-post-SBRT CLCs and non-A blood groups seem to exhibits best curative effect, which represent a potential opportunity to improve the clinical management of these patients. The mechanisms of this association deserve further verification and investigation.
