Item Forging a New DEI-Focused Track for Librarian Promotion and Tenure(2023-03-16) Stone, Sean; Little, Lee; Pieczko, Brandon T.A large, four-year institution recently approved an official promotion and tenure track for faculty focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion. All schools and academic units were tasked with developing new promotion and tenure standards in accordance with campus mandates and requirements but tailored to address the needs of specific disciplines and academic units. There were two main goals for this new track: 1) to formally recognize professional diversity, equity, and inclusion activities as a path for promotion and tenure with a focus on the professional narrative and incorporating new measures of success and impact including greater emphasis on community engagement, and 2) to develop a more holistic approach to reporting professional activities and achievements by uncoupling them, as much as possible, from the standard system of “binned” categories such as research, service, and performance). This poster outlines the work of a group of faculty librarians in developing these standards for librarian promotion and tenure. An ad hoc group of faculty librarians was formed by the campus Librarian Faculty Council with representatives from all the libraries on campus. Committee members came from many different points in the promotion and tenure process; from early career, pre-tenure librarians to those that had completely been through the process and even served on promotion and tenure groups and committees. The group went through several cycles of development of DEI promotion and tenure standards based on campus level documents and feedback from representatives to other DEI-focused campus groups, and of course, other faculty librarians. While the work was done with extensive input from various stakeholders at various levels, there was no finished archetype on which to base the final document. Additionally, campus level standards and expectations continued to develop and change throughout the process meaning the group was aiming for a moving target. Another major challenge was producing standards that were less prescribed and holistic to allow for greater freedom in the construction of candidates’ professional narratives; the recognition of DEI-focused professional activities; and the inclusion of novel metrics for demonstrating impact while still providing ample guidance and examples so that candidates would have enough guidance without feeling constrained. It was also critical for the librarian standards to match standards mandated at the campus level (often grounded in more traditional metrics and categories) while at the same time being more inclusive of DEI activities without giving DEI-track candidates the feeling that they were actually doing more work than other candidates presenting more traditional cases for promotion and tenure. It was also important to the committee to create a document that would be as easy as possible for mentors, reviewers, and members of the various promotion and tenure committees to use for guiding and evaluating candidates. The new standards were approved by library faculty in spring of 2022 and the first candidates for third-year reviews and promotion and tenure will begin utilizing them to construct their dossiers and narratives.Item Inclusive Lab Space for International Dentist and Allied Dental Students(2023-10-25) Cho, Sopanis; Priest, Michelle; Stone, SeanStudents in the International Dentist Program (IDP) and Allied Dental Programs [Dental Assisting (DA) and Dental Hygiene (DH)] lack a space in the Dental School building to call “home”. Scheduling of laboratory, and didactic spaces for both DA and IDP specific courses is often challenging as the room scheduling for the traditional DDS courses takes priority. Because of this, DA and IDP students experience a diminished sense of belonging. The repurposing of an existing shared preclinical laboratory space to address unique needs of DA, DH, and IDP students will not only enhance their learning experiences, but also foster inclusivity and promote their sense of belonging at the schoolItem Non-Carious Cervical Lesions: A Bibliometric Analysis and Future Research Trends(Elsevier, 2024-07-11) Denucci, Giovanna; Stone, Sean; Hara, AndersonObjective: The present bibliometric review analyzed the literature on non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs) to explore the current state and propose future research topics. Data: An electronic search was performed, only full scientific papers published in English were included. Sources: A search was conducted of all databases in the Web of Science (WOS) platform for available publications on the topic of NCCLs. Study Selection: 959 publications were retrieved, and the following data were extracted and analyzed: number of publications, study topics, keywords, study type, authors, affiliations, countries, funding agencies, journals and citations. Articles on NCCLs have been increasing in count, ever since they were first mentioned in the literature. Therapy alternatives account for 628 with few on prevention, and the majority were clinical. Brazil has published the most on NCCLs as well as has the highest number of authors and the most funded articles. The three journals that published the most on the topic were Operative Dentistry, Journal of Dentistry and Clinical Oral Investigations. Conclusion: The findings of this study provide a full picture of the current literature on NCCLs, research trends, knowledge gaps, and areas requiring further investigation. Clinical Significance: By highlighting evolving treatment strategies and potential gaps in prevention, researchers can contribute to the advancement of clinical practice. This can improve patient care and outcomes in the management of NCCLs, while also providing valuable insights for policymakers to prioritize research funding and policy initiatives.Item Perceptions on Oral Ulcers From Facebook Page Categories: Observational Study(JMIR, 2023-01) Simhadri, Suguna; Yalamanchi, Sriha; Stone, Sean; Srinivasan, Mythily; Oral Pathology, Medicine and Radiology, School of DentistryBackground: Oral ulcers are a common condition affecting a considerable proportion of the population, and they are often associated with trauma and stress. They are very painful, and interfere with eating. As they are usually considered an annoyance, people may turn to social media for potential management options. Facebook is one of the most commonly accessed social media platforms and is the primary source of news information, including health information, for a significant percentage of American adults. Given the increasing importance of social media as a source of health information, potential remedies, and prevention strategies, it is essential to understand the type and quality of information available on Facebook regarding oral ulcers. Objective: The goal of our study was to evaluate information on recurrent oral ulcers that can be accessed via the most popular social media network—Facebook. Methods: We performed a keyword search of Facebook pages on 2 consecutive days in March 2022, using duplicate, newly created accounts, and then anonymized all posts. The collected pages were filtered, using predefined criteria to include only English-language pages wherein oral ulcer information was posted by the general public and to exclude pages created by professional dentists, associated professionals, organizations, and academic researchers. The selected pages were then screened for page origin and Facebook categories. Results: Our initial keyword search yielded 517 pages; interestingly however, only 112 (22%) of pages had information relevant to oral ulcers, and 405 (78%) had irrelevant information, with ulcers being mentioned in relation to other parts of the human body. Excluding professional pages and pages without relevant posts resulted in 30 pages, of which 9 (30%) were categorized as “health/beauty” pages or as “product/service” pages, 3 (10%) were categorized as “medical & health” pages, and 5 (17%) were categorized as “community” pages. Majority of the pages (22/30, 73%) originated from 6 countries; most originated from the United States (7 pages), followed by India (6 pages). There was little information on oral ulcer prevention, long-term treatment, and complications. Conclusions: Facebook, in oral ulcer information dissemination, appears to be primarily used as an adjunct to business enterprises for marketing or for enhancing access to a product. Consequently, it was unsurprising that there was little information on oral ulcer prevention, long-term treatment, and complications. Although we made efforts to identify and select Facebook pages related to oral ulcers, we did not manually verify the authenticity or accuracy of the pages included in our analysis, potentially limiting the reliability of our findings or resulting in bias toward specific products or services. Although this work forms something of a pilot project, we plan to expand the project to encompass text mining for content analysis and include multiple social media platforms in the future.
