Item Computational Fluid Dynamics for Modeling and Simulation of Intraocular Drug Delivery and Wall Shear Stress in Pulsatile Flow(2020-08) Abootorabi, Seyedalireza; Yu, Huidan; Nematollahi, Khosrow; Yokota, HirokiThe thesis includes two application studies of computational fluid dynamics. The first is new and efficient drug delivery to the posterior part of the eye, a growing health necessity worldwide. Current treatment of eye diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), relies on repeated intravitreal injections of drug-containing solutions. Such a drug delivery has significant cant drawbacks, including short drug life, vital medical service, and high medical costs. In this study, we explore a new approach of controlled drug delivery by introducing unique porous implants. Computational modeling contains physiological and anatomical traits. We simulate the IgG1 Fab drug delivery to the posterior eye to evaluate the effectiveness of the porous implants to control the drug delivery. The computational model was validated by established computation results from independent studies and experimental data. Overall, the results indicate that therapeutic drug levels in the posterior eye are sustained for eight weeks, similar to those performed with intravitreal injection of the same drug. We evaluate the effects of the porous implant on the time evaluation of the drug concentrations in the sclera, choroid, and retina layers of the eye. Subsequent simulations were carried out with varying porosity values of a porous episcleral implant. Our computational results reveal that the time evolution of drug concentration is distinctively correlated to drug source location and pore size. The response of this porous implant for controlled drug delivery applications was examined. A correlation between porosity and fluid properties for the porous implants was revealed in this study. The introduction of cellular material models in topology optimization allows designers to achieve significant weight reductions in structural applications. However, the traditional topology optimization method is challenged by the use of cellular materials. Furthermore, increased material savings and performance can be achieved if the material and the structure topologies are concurrently designed. Hence, multi-scale topology optimization methodologies are introduced to fulfill this goal. The objective of this investigation is to discuss and compare the design methodologies to obtaining optimal macro-scale structures and the corresponding optimal meso-scale material designs in continuum design domains. These approaches make use of homogenization theory to establish communication bridges between both material and structural scales. The periodicity constraint makes such cellular materials manufacturable while relaxing the periodicity constraint to achieve major improvements of structural performance. Penalization methods are used to obtain binary solutions in both scales. The proposed methodologies are demonstrated in the design of stiff structure and compliant mechanism synthesis. The multiscale results are compared with the traditional structural-level designs in the context of Pareto solutions, demonstrating benefits of ultra-lightweight configurations. Errors involved in the mult-scale topology optimization procedure are also discussed. Errors are mainly classified as mesh refinement errors and homogenization errors. Comparisons between the multi-level designs and uni-level designs of solid structures, structures using periodic cellular materials and non-periodic cellular materials are provided. Error quantifications also indicate the superiority of using non-periodic cellular materials rather than periodic cellular materials.Item Design and Fatigue Analysis of an LWD Drill Tool(2019-08) Joshi, Riddhi; El-Mounayri, Hazim; Tovar, Andres; Nematollahi, KhosrowPrevious works suggest that 80% to 90% of failures observed in the rotary machines are accounted for fatigue failure. And it is observed that cyclic stresses are more critical than steady stresses when the failure occurred is due to fatigue. One of the most expensive industries involving rotary machines is the Oil and Gas industry. The large drilling tools are used for oil extracts on-shore and off-shore. There are several forces that act on a drilling tool while operating below the earth's surface. Those forces are namely pressure, bending moment and torque. The tool is designed from the baseline model of the former tool in Solidworks and Design Molder. Here load acting due to pressure and torque accounts for steady stress i.e., Mean Stress and loading acting due to bending moment account for fluctuating stress i.e., Alternating Stress. The loading and boundary conditions have been adapted from Halliburton’s previous works for the LWD drill tool to better estimate the size of the largest possible transducer. The fatigue analysis of static load cases is carried out in Ansys Mechanical Workbench 19.0 using static structural analysis. The simulation is run to obtain results for total deformation, equivalent stress, and user-defined results. The component is designed for infinite life to calculate the endurance limit. Shigley guidelines and FKM guidelines are compared as a part of a study to select the best possible approach in the current application. The width of the imaging pocket is varied from 1.25 inches to 2.0 inches to accommodate the largest possible transducer without compromising the structural integrity of the tool. The optimum design is chosen based on the stress life theory criteria namely Gerber theory and Goodman Theory.Item Design of a helmet with an advanced layered composite for energy dissipation using a multi-material compliant mechanism synthesis(2016) Gokhale, Vaibhav V.; Tovar, Andres; Nematollahi, Khosrow; Zhu, Likun; Chen, JieTraumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) are one of the most apprehensive issues today. In recent years a lot of research has been done for reducing the risk of TBI, but no concrete solution exists yet. Helmets are one of the protective devices that are used to prevent human beings from mild TBI. For many years some kind of foam has been used in helmets for energy absorption. But, in recent years non-traditional solutions other than foam are being explored by different groups. Focus of this thesis is to develop a completely new concept of energy absorption for helmet liner by diverting the impact forces in radial directions normal to the direction of impact. This work presents a new design of an advanced layered composite (ALC) for energy dissipation through action of a 3D array of compliant mechanisms. The ALC works by diverting incoming forces in multiple radial directions and also has design provisions for reducing rotational forces. Design of compliant mechanism is optimized using multi-material topology optimization algorithm considering rigid and flexible material phases together with void. The design proposed here needs to be manufactured using the advanced polyjet printing additive manufacturing process. A general and parametric design procedure is explained which can be used to produce variants of the designs for different impact conditions and different applications. Performance of the designed ALC is examined through a benchmark example in which a comparison is made between the ALC and the traditional liner foam. An impact test is carried out in this benchmark example using dynamic Finite Element Analysis in LS DYNA. The comparison parameters under consideration are gradualness of energy absorption and peak linear force transmitted from the ALC to the body in contact with it. The design in this article is done particularly for the use in sports helmets. However, the ALC may find applications in other energy absorbing structures such as vehicle crashworthy components and protective gears. The ultimate goal of this research is to provide a novel design of energy absorbing structure which reduces the risk of head injury when the helmet is worn.Item Design of an Origami Patterned Pre-Folded Thin Walled Tubular Structure for Crashworthiness(2019-05) Chaudhari, Prathamesh; Tovar, Andres; Nematollahi, Khosrow; El-Mounayri, Hazim A.Thin walled tubular structures are widely used in the automotive industry because of its weight to energy absorption advantage. A lot of research has been done in different cross sectional shapes and different tapered designs, with design for manufacturability in mind, to achieve high specific energy absorption. In this study a novel type of tubular structure is proposed, in which predesigned origami initiators are introduced into conventional square tubes. The crease pattern is designed to achieve extensional collapse mode which results in decreasing the initial buckling forces and at the same time acts as a fold initiator, helping to achieve a extensional collapse mode. The influence of various design parameters of the origami pattern on the mechanical properties (crushing force and deceleration) are extensively investigated using finite element modelling. Thus, showing a predictable and stable collapse behavior. This pattern can be stamped out of a thin sheet of material. The results showed that a properly designed origami pattern can consistently trigger a extensional collapse mode which can significantly lower the peak values of crushing forces and deceleration without compromising on the mean values. Also, a comparison has been made with the behavior of proposed origami pattern for extensional mode verses origami pattern with diamond fold.Item Design of compliant mechanism lattice structures for impact energy absorption(2017-12) Najmon, Joel Christian; Tovar, Andres; Ryu, Jong; Nematollahi, KhosrowLattice structures have seen increasing use in several industries including automotive, aerospace, and construction. Lattice structures are lightweight and can achieve a wide range of mechanical behaviors through their inherent cellular design. Moreover, the unit cells of lattice structures can easily be meshed and conformed to a wide variety of volumes. Compliant mechanism make suitable micro-structures for units cells in lattice structures that are designed for impact energy absorption. The flexibility of compliant mechanisms allows for energy dissipation via straining of the members and also mitigates the effects of impact direction uncertainties. Density-based topology optimization methods can be used to synthesize compliant mechanisms. To aid with this task, a proposed optimization tool, coded in MATLAB, is created. The program is built on a modular structure and allows for the easy addition of new algorithms and objective functions beyond what is developed in this study. An adjacent investigation is also performed to determine the dependencies and trends of mechanical and geometric advantages of compliant mechanisms. The implications of such are discussed. The result of this study is a compliant mechanism lattice structure for impact energy absorption. The performance of this structure is analyzed through the application of it in a football helmet. Two types of unit cell compliant mechanisms are synthesized and assembled into three liner configurations. Helmet liners are further developed through a series of ballistic impact analysis simulations to determine the best lattice structure configuration and mechanism rubber hardness. The final liner is compared with a traditional expanded polypropylene foam liner to appraise the protection capabilities of the proposed lattice structure.Item Development of ABAQUS-MATLAB Interface for Design Optimization using Hybrid Cellular Automata and Comparison with Bidirectional Evolutionary Structural Optimization(2021-12) Antony, Alen; Tovar, Andres; Nematollahi, Khosrow; Du, XiaopingTopology Optimization is an optimization technique used to synthesize models without any preconceived shape. These structures are synthesized keeping in mind the minimum compliance problems. With the rapid improvement in advanced manufacturing technology and increased need for lightweight high strength designs topology optimization is being used more than ever. There exist a number of commercially available software's that can be used for optimizing a product. These software have a robust Finite Element Solver and can produce good results. However, these software offers little to no choice to the user when it comes to selecting the type of optimization method used. It is possible to use a programming language like MATLAB to develop algorithms that use a specific type of optimization method but the user himself will be responsible for writing the FEA algorithms too. This leads to a situation where the flexibility over the optimization method is achieved but the robust FEA of the commercial FEA tool is lost. There have been works done in the past that links ABAQUS with MATLAB but they are primarily used as a tool for finite element post-processing. Through this thesis, the aim is to develop an interface that can be used for solving optimization problems using different methods like hard-kill as well as the material penalization (SIMP) method. By doing so it's possible to harness the potential of a commercial FEA software and gives the user the requires flexibility to write or modify the codes to have an optimization method of his or her choice. Also, by implementing this interface, it can also be potentially used to unlock the capabilities of other Dassault Systèmes software's as the firm is implementing a tighter integration between all its products using the 3DExperience platform. This thesis as described uses this interface to implement BESO and HCA based topology optimization. Since hybrid cellular atomata is the only other method other than equivalent static load method that can be used for crashworthiness optimization this work suits well for the role when extended into a non-linear region.Item High-fidelity modelling of a bulldozer using an explicit multibody dynamics finite element code with integrated discrete element method(2015-04-29) Sane, Akshay Gajanan; Wasfy, Tamer; El-Mounayri, Hazim; Nematollahi, KhosrowIn this thesis, an explicit time integration code which integrates multibody dynamics and the discrete element method is used for modelling the excavation and moving operation of cohesive soft soil (such as mud and snow) by bulldozers. A soft cohesive soil material model (that includes normal and tangential inter-particle force models) is used that can account for soil compressibility, plasticity, fracture, friction, viscosity and gain in cohesive strength due to compression. In addition, a time relaxation sub-model for the soil plastic deformation and cohesive strength is added in order to account for loss in soil cohesive strength and reduced bulk density due to tension or removal of the compression. This is essential in earth moving applications since the soil that is dug typically becomes loose soil that has lower shear strength and lower bulk density (larger volume) than compacted soil. If the model does not account for loss of soil shear strength then the dug soil pile in front of the blade of a bulldozer will have an artificially high shear strength. A penalty technique is used to impose joint and normal contact constraints. An asperity-based friction model is used to model contact and joint friction. A Cartesian Eulerian grid contact search algorithm is used to allow fast contact detection between particles. A recursive bounding box contact search algorithm is used to allow fast contact detection between the particles and polygonal contact surfaces. A multibody dynamics bulldozer model is created which includes the chassis/body, C-frame, blade, wheels and hydraulic actuators. The components are modelled as rigid bodies and are connected using revolute and prismatic joints. Rotary actuators along with PD (Proportional-Derivative) controllers are used to drive the wheels. Linear actuators along with PD controllers are used to drive the hydraulic actuators. Polygonal contact surfaces are defined for the tires and blade to model the interaction between the soil and the bulldozer. Simulations of a bulldozer performing typical shallow digging operations in a cohesive soil are presented. The simulation of a rear wheel drive bulldozer shows that, it has a limited digging capacity compared to the 4-wheel drive bulldozer. The effect of the relaxation parameter can be easily observed from the variation in the Bulldozer's velocity. The higher the relaxation parameter, the higher is the bulldozer's velocity while it is crossing over the soil patch. For the low penetration depth run the bulldozer takes less time compared to high penetration depth. Also higher magnitudes of torques at front and rear wheels can be observed in case of high penetration depth. The model is used to predict the wheel torque, wheel speed, vehicle speed and actuator forces during shallow digging operations on three types of soils and at two blade penetration depths. The model presented can be used to predict the motion, loads and required actuators forces and to improve the design of the various bulldozer components such as the blade, tires, engine and hydraulic actuators.Item Optimized NURBS Curve Based G-Code Part Program for CNC Systems(2018-12) Kanna, Sai Ashish; El-Mounayri, Hazim; Tovar, Andres; Nematollahi, Khosrow; Chen, JieComputer Numerical Control (CNC) is widely used in many industries that needs high speed machining of the parts with high precision, accuracy and good surface finish. In order to avail this the generation of the CNC part program size will be immensely big and leads to an inefficient process, which increases the delivery time and cost of products. This work presents the automation of high-accuracy CNC tool trajectory planning from CAD to G-code generation through optimal NURBs surface approximation. The proposed optimization method finds the minimum number of NURBS control points for a given admissible theoretical cord error between the desired and manufactured surfaces. The result is a compact part program that is less sensitive to data starvation than circular and spline interpolations with potential better surface finish. The proposed approach is demonstrated with the tool path generation of an involute gear profile and a topologically optimized structure is developed using this approach and then finally it is 3D printed.Item Origami Inspired Design of Thin Walled Tubular Structures for Impact Loading(2019-08) Shinde, Shantanu R.; Tovar, Andres; Nematollahi, Khosrow; Dalir, HamidThin-walled structures find wide applications in the automotive industry as energy absorption devices. A great deal of research has been conducted to design thin-walled structures, where the main objective is to reduce peak crushing forces and increase energy absorption capacity. With the advancement of computers and mathematics, it has been possible to develop 2D patterns which when folded turn into complex 3D structures. This technology can be used to develop patterns for getting structures with desired properties. In this study, square origami tubes with folding pattern (Yoshimura pattern) is designed and studied extensively using numerical analysis. An accurate Finite Element Model (FEM) is developed to conduct the numerical analysis. A parametric study was conducted to study the influence of geometric parameters on the mechanical properties like peak crushing force, mean crushing force, load uniformity and maximum intrusion, when subjected to dynamic loading. The results from this analysis are studied and various conclusions are drawn. It is found that, when the tube is folded with the pattern having specific dimensions, the performance is enhanced significantly, with predictable and stable collapse. It is also found that the stiffness of the module varies with geometrical parameters. With a proper study it is possible to develop origami structures with functionally graded stiffness, the performance of which can be tuned as per requirement, hence, showing promising capabilities as an energy absorption device where progressive collapse from near to end impact end is desired.
