    Bringing the Canadian Archive of Women in STEM to Wikidata: How Wikidata can be used in an archival context

    Libraries and archives can play a critical role in the creation and curation of data in Wikidata to ensure underrepresented communities are not only included, but also properly described in the knowledge base. This workshop will provide a brief overview of Wikidata in the archival context and its possible uses. We will also share our experiences using Wikidata for the the Canadian Archive of Women in STEM initiative (https://biblio.uottawa.ca/en/women-in-stem/about) based on the WikiProject Archival Description initiative (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:WikiProject_Archival_Description). The goal of the Canadian Archive of Women in STEM is to bring attention to and promote the discovery of the archival records of women in STEM held by Canadian institutions–a bilingual portal containing descriptive metadata, a biographical sketch/admin history about the women/organizations and information about the host institution–in order to provide a simplified avenue for researchers to discover all available holdings. Contributing the archival metadata and the biographical sketch, as well as links to the host institutions to Wikidata could further increase the visibility of collections, finding aids, as well as the institutions themselves, beyond archival or library systems. This workshop is designed to be interactive with a series of hands-on activities which includes a demonstration of how to contribute content from archival finding aids to Wikidata as well as an introduction on efficient workflows and useful tools for contributing, visualizing and querying the data. This workshop aims to encourage archivists to participate in the open knowledge movement and contribute their unique collections to Wikidata to expand their findability and reach.

    Building positive learning experiences through pedagogical research guide design

    Library research guides are traditionally designed in a pathfinder-style format by resource type. However, would a pedagogical-style guide, which moves students through the research process, better support the student learning experience? This study sought to answer the question: Which guide design best supports the student information literacy learning experience outside of a classroom setting? This article reports results of a usability study (n=22) of first-year to graduate students who interacted with either a pedagogical or pathfinder-style research guide through a simulated research assignment. Results indicate that although there is no statistically significant performance difference between guide type, students using the pedagogical guide reported a more positive experience than those using the pathfinder guide. As a result, this led them to spend more time on, interact more with, and consult more resources on the research guide. Librarians who wish to enhance the usability of research guides may get greater student engagement by designing their guides pedagogically.

    Connecting Library Instruction to Web Usability: Improve User Experience

    The digital user experience librarian conducted an experiment with one of the instructional librarians at IUPUI in order to investigate the intersection between user's web behavior and library instruction. They thought that library instruction plays a key role in web usability and affects the ways students behave on the library website, yet very little research has combined these two realms. During instructional sessions, freshman students were asked to perform a series of information seeking tasks on the library website both prior to, and immediately after, instruction. A usability tool - Verify - recorded individual student use of the website during the completion of each of these tasks. We'd like to share the results we found. The results allowed us to investigate how students behaved on the library website to complete the tasks and how the steps demonstrated by the librarian during instruction strongly influenced how students completed the tasks afterward.

    Connecting Library Instruction to Web Usability: The Key Role of Library Instruction to Change Students’ Web Behavior

    This article is a conference proceeding for the 4th International Conference of Asian Special Libraries. Library instruction plays a key role in web usability. During instructional sessions, librarians shape the ways students behave on the library website (user’s web behavior). They teach students how to use the library website and demonstrate various pathways by which students can access library resources and services. Although library instruction and user’s web behavior are closely intertwined, very little research has combined these two realms. Many usability studies have focused only on the library website itself without considering the various contexts in which students use it. Few usability studies have had any connection with library instruction. This study investigated the intersection between user’s web behavior and library instruction.     Factors of trust in data reuse

    Purpose The purpose of this paper is to quantitatively examine factors of trust in data reuse from the reusers’ perspectives. Design/methodology/approach This study utilized a survey method to test the proposed hypotheses and to empirically evaluate the research model, which was developed to examine the relationship each factor of trust has with reusers’ actual trust during data reuse. Findings This study found that the data producer (H1) and data quality (H3) were significant, as predicted, while scholarly community (H3) and data intermediary (H4) were not significantly related to reusers’ trust in data. Research limitations/implications Further disciplinary specific examinations should be conducted to complement the study findings and fully generalize the study findings. Practical implications The study finding presents the need for engaging data producers in the process of data curation, preferably beginning in the early stages and encouraging them to work with curation professionals to ensure data management quality. The study finding also suggests the need for re-defining the boundaries of current curation work or collaborating with other professionals who can perform data quality assessment that is related to scientific and methodological rigor. Originality/value By analyzing theoretical concepts in empirical research and validating the factors of trust, this study fills this gap in the data reuse literature.

    Holistic Approach to User Experience: Understanding of Users

    The IUPUI University Library recently initiated a project to improve the user experience on its website. In order to enhance the digital user experience, it should start from a thorough understanding of users such as who they are, what they do, how they interact with, how long they stay, where they come from, and etc. The first task called ‘Library Website Evaluation & Needs Assessment’ has been performed with various measurements from user survey to Google Analytics to better understand its users as well as to identify current issues and gaps between what the website currently is and how it should be. This poster will share some of the findings from the first task.
