The 2022 Global Philanthropy Environment Index(IU Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, 2022-03-10) Indiana University Lilly Family School of PhilanthropyItem Engagement of African Donors in Advancing Higher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa(Indiana University, 2024-09-30) Indiana University Lilly Family School of PhilanthropyIn 2023 and 2024, the school organized a series of three convenings to promote informed dialogue among higher education advancement professionals, leaders from civil society organizations and philanthropy infrastructure organizations, scholars, and policymakers. Through one in-person convening and two webinars, the school facilitated conversations on a variety of topics related to philanthropy for higher education in sub-Saharan Africa. It is clear that HEIs face many internal and external challenges in raising philanthropic support. Even though there has been growth in giving in Africa, especially by high net worth (HNW) individuals toward higher education, the philanthropic funding is largely supporting scholarships and infrastructure projects, not leading to systemic and cultural changes. The conversations at these convenings also suggested some ideas to encourage philanthropy for higher education in Africa. The onset of virtual interactions and engagement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, supports the need for enticing, digital content that effectively present nonprofit organizations’ impact and their ongoing need for support. The second report in this series, Focus Group Research on US Donor Participation, highlighted the growing donor demand for increased engagement and education, and the need to demonstrate impact clearly. Subscription-based giving presents an opportunity to retain donors through curated content and engagement.
