Item A phenomenological study of the lived experience of nurses in the battle of COVID-19(Springer Nature, 2021) Gunawan, Joko; Aungsuroch, Yupin; Marzilli, Colleen; Fisher, Mary L.; Nazliansyah; Sukarna, Ade; School of NursingBackground: Roles and responsibilities of nurses are crucial in the battle of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but nursing duties also put them at risk for infections. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of nurses in combatting COVID-19 in Belitung, Indonesia. Methods: This study employed a phenomenological study design. Online interviews and chatting were conducted among 17 clinical nurses who were purposively selected from March to June 2020. Data were audio-recorded, transcribed, and validated among researchers. The thematic approach was used for data analysis. Findings: Seven themes emerged (1) feeling "nano-nano", (2) lack of N95 masks, (3) we are just pawns, (4) being rejected, (5) please do not spread our identity, (6) we miss home, and (7) feeling betrayed by regulation. Discussion: Findings of this study should be used by government agencies, nurses, and the general population in combatting COVID-19.Item Gender and managerial competence: a comparison of male and female first-line nurse managers in Indonesia(Frontiers Media, 2021) Gunawan, Joko; Aungsuroch, Yupin; Fisher, Mary L.; McDaniel, Anna M.; School of NursingObjective: First-line nurse managers are more likely to work according to gender beliefs and stereotypes, which may affect their managerial competence. This study is aimed at comparing managerial competence of male and female first-line nurse managers in public hospitals in Indonesia. Methods: This study employed a descriptive comparative approach with a cross-sectional survey with a total of 256 participants selected from 18 public hospitals. To measure managerial competence, the managerial competence scale for Indonesian first-line nurse managers was used. Data were analyzed using descriptive analyses using mean, standard deviation, and Independent t-test. Results: Managerial competence of male and female first-line nurse managers was not significantly different (P = 0.555). Female nurse managers descriptively reported/received higher ranking in facilitating spiritual nursing care, managing self, staffing and professional development, utilizing informatics, and applying quality care improvement. Male nurse managers reported higher in leadership and financial management. Conclusions: Female and male first-line nurse managers should be treated equally for leadership and managerial development.Item Novelty: Nursing scholars’ guide for successful publication(Belitung Raya Foundation Indonesia, 2022-10-21) Gunawan, Joko; Aungsuroch, Yupin; Fisher, Mary L.; Marzilli, Colleen; School of NursingThe “pressure” or “passion” to publish is a common reality in academia. All faculty are required to demonstrate that they are engaged in research and that their work is disseminated in reputable journals. However, writing manuscripts is quite challenging; some papers for publication may take days, weeks, months, and even years. This editorial aims to provide the editors’ points of view to assist authors in successful acceptance and publication in an international nursing journal.Item Nurse education today: Between teaching and publication focus(Belitung Raya Foundation, 2021-08-27) Gunawan, Joko; Aungsuroch, Yupin; Fisher, Mary L.; School of Nursing“Publish or Perish” is no longer an imagination. On the contrary, it is considered a new reality in nursing education today. All nurse scholars, researchers, faculty members, and students are eager and compete with each other to publish their research works in academic journals. Success in this challenge brings personal benefits, especially for academic reputation and promotion, as well as organizational benefits, such as university ranking and sponsorship. However, despite the advantages of faculty publication, the pros and cons of this topic are on the rise. Therefore, this article aims to discuss the publication-related phenomenon in nursing education, followed by concerns and recommendations for consideration.Item Nursing students' perceptions of presence in online courses(2015-08-27) Van Schyndel, Jennie L.; Halstead, Judith Ann; Pesut, Daniel J.; Fisher, Mary L.; Bakas, TamilynLack of presence in online courses can result in perceived isolation leading to student dissatisfaction with the learning experience. The purpose of this study was to measure nursing students' perceived extent of teaching, social and cognitive presence and course satisfaction in an online undergraduate nursing course, and whether relationships and associations existed between the three presences, course satisfaction, student demographic, academic, and technology variables, and selected instructional strategies. The Community of Inquiry theory was the framework used in this descriptive correlational study of RN-BSN students (n= 76). Variables were measured using the Community of Inquiry Survey and the Perceived Student Satisfaction Scale instruments, and a researcher developed survey. Findings indicated students' perceived teaching and cognitive presence were present to a greater extent than social presence. Significant positive correlations (p < .01) were found between teaching and cognitive presence (r =.79), cognitive and social presence (r =.64), teaching and social presence (r =.52), satisfaction and the teaching (r =.77), social (r =.63), and cognitive (r =.52) presences. There were no significant findings associated with age, ethnicity, race, number of online courses taken, expected course grade or GPA and perceptions of the three presences and course satisfaction. There was a significant difference (p ≤ .05) with gender and perceived social presence with male students reporting stronger levels. Students experiencing course technology difficulties reported significantly (p ≤ .05) lower perceptions of teaching presence than those experiencing no difficulty. Significant differences (p ≤ .05) were found between specific course instructional strategies and each presence and course satisfaction. The findings provide faculty with an understanding of online course management and teaching/learning strategies that may increase students' perceptions of presence in online courses and improve student satisfaction with online learning.Item Stress and Coping in Nurse Managers: A Qualitative Description(2009-03-18T18:50:58Z) Shirey, Maria R.; McDaniel, Anna M.; Doebbeling, Bradley N.; Ebright, Patricia R.; Fisher, Mary L.Objective: This study provided a qualitative description of stress and coping as perceived by today's nurse manager incumbents. Background: The healthcare work environment as a source of overwork and stress has been implicated in today's nursing shortage. Nurse managers play a pivotal role in creating work environments for staff nurses, but little is known about the nature of nurse manager work. Methods: This qualitative descriptive study determined what situations contribute to nurse manager stress, what coping strategies they utilize, what health outcomes they report, and what decision-making processes they follow to address stressful situations in their roles. A purposive sample of 21 nurse managers employed at three U.S. acute care hospitals participated in the study. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and a 14-question interview incorporating components of the Critical Decision Method. Content analysis was completed and themes identified. Results: Difficult situations reported included feeling pressure to perform, interpersonal conflicts associated with organizational communication deficits, and issues of human resources and staffing. Nurse managers utilized a combination of emotion-focused and problem-focused coping strategies. When comparing novice nurse managers (3 years or less in role) with experienced nurse managers (greater than 3 years in role), the novices used predominantly emotion-focused coping strategies, a narrow repertoire of self-care strategies, and experienced negative psychological, physiological, and functional outcomes related to their coping efforts. Experienced nurse managers working as co-managers demonstrated mostly problem-focused coping strategies, a broad repertoire of self-care strategies, and reported no negative health outcomes. The study produced a cognitive model in the form of 10 questions that guide nurse manager decision-making related to stressful situations. The study generated four themes amenable to intervention. Conclusions: Performance expectations for nurse managers in acute care hospitals have increased since the 1990's making the role requirements unrealistic. Rising expectations increase nurse manager stress perceptions, making coping more difficult, and potentially harming nurse manager and work environment well-being. Findings from this study suggest that to address stress, coping, and complexity in the nurse manager role requires a combination of strategies that address individual factors as well as organizational culture, supportive structures, and systems that facilitate the role.
