Item Developing, Writing and Teaching Case Studies in Philanthropic Studies(2022-11-10) Danahey Janin, PatTeaching philanthropic studies globally requires an understanding of how context influences the nonprofit sector around the world (Casey, 2023). Cases studies allow students to peer into a situation and consider a decision-making process to understand how contexts, individuals, and processes influence outcomes. This poster presents my 5-step process of developing, writing, and teaching a teaching case study for an original elective course on philanthropy and the ocean for an international undergraduate student body. It highlights a pedagogical practice to enhance learning through active engagement, international examples, and connecting international students in the classroom.Item Moving the Needle: Central Florida Foundation and Horizon Goals(Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, 2023-05-05) Danahey Janin, Pat; Paarlberg, Laurie E.This teaching case study is a pedagogical tool to develop the skills of graduate students in understanding how a community foundation adopts a new framework to galvanize their local community around key issues. The case is based on the decision of the leadership of the Central Florida Foundation (CFF) to adopt the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a framework to understand community progress on key issues such as health, employment, and housing. The case describes the internal and external efforts by the CFF to apply the global SDGs to local issues and engage community partners in their efforts. Students are asked to identify why CFF’s approach to adopting the SDFs was successful and what is necessary to keep it sustainable. Students can gain insight into the building blocks of a successful approach to community change. The text contains information about the political, economic, social, and cultural environment in Orlando, Florida and the way that CFF engages in cross-sector collaborations to improve their community.Item The Role of Philanthropic Studies in Equipping Students to Articulate their Personal and Vocational Purpose(Sagamore, 2020-10) Nathan, Sarah K.; Shaker, Genevieve G.; Danahey Janin, Pat; Lilly Family School of PhilanthropyPositioned within the larger discussion regarding the outcomes of a liberal arts education, this qualitative study examined Philanthropic Studies undergraduates’ articulation of purpose. Fifteen majors participated in this grounded theory study, providing insight into the student experience in this new, liberal arts discipline. Findings are expressed in a theoretical framework showing how most students’ articulation of purpose successfully evolved to include and integrate personal and vocational aims. Most of the Philanthropic Studies students held a strong, values-based orientation that underscored their experiences and perspective but was not enough to assure a confident vocational purpose on its own. The framework aligns and complements theories of student development and illuminates a number of personal and programmatic factors that facilitated or hampered the students’ progression. The study suggests that liberal arts-based curricula can do well with a holistic approach that attends closely not just to students’ academic achievements but also to their sense of personal purpose, career interests and vocational concerns, while using experiential learning strategies in generous measure.Item Stewards with Intentionality: Legacy Foundation and Community Leadership(Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, 2023-05-05) Danahey Janin, Pat; Paarlberg, Laurie E.This teaching case study is a pedagogical tool to develop the skills of graduate students in understanding how a community foundation adopts an international framework to address longstanding local issues and stimulate cross-stakeholder collaborations. The case is based on the decision of the leadership of the Legacy Foundation, a regional community foundation, to explore how the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals could help advance their community work. The case describes the internal efforts of Legacy’s leadership to shift from a purely donor-centric focus to taking on the active role of a community convener to lead on local issues. Students are asked to assess whether Legacy’s approach to changing their donor-centric role by exploring the adoption of the SDGs would be supported by the larger community of donors, nonprofits, government, and businesses. Students can gain insight into the process of organizational change and leadership. The text contains information about the rural political, economic, social, and cultural environment in Kansas and direct video footage of board members speaking about their commitment and community.Item Vietnam and Philanthropy: Social Movements, Economic Development and Ocean Issues. Teaching Case Study and Teaching Notes(2022-11) Danahey Janin, PatThis teaching case study and teaching note are pedagogical tools to develop the skills of undergraduate students in analyzing a philanthropic landscape. The case is based on the decision dilemma of a philanthropic actor in the face of a 2016 fish kill event that impacted the ocean environment and the livelihoods of communities in central Vietnam. The event sparked environmental protests and multiple responses to a general government crack down on civil society. Students are asked to position themselves on the decision dilemma and discover the complexity and challenges of a philanthropic actor’s activity. The text contains information about the political, economic, social and cultural environment in Vietnam and the development, manifestation and common approaches to philanthropic activity (giving, associating and volunteering). The teaching note provides suggestions on teaching delivery, discussion scenarios and reading material on civil society, philanthropic actors’ responses to the shrinking space of civil society, multi-disciplinary approaches to volunteering, cultural influences on philanthropic behavior and environmental movements.
