Item Achieving ADL Independence Post-Stroke Through Occupational Therapy Interventions(2024-04-24) Wonnell, Cassie; Gulyas, Belle; DeGeorge, August; Knoy, Morgan; Warrick, Emilee; Fowler, Avery; Chase, Anthony; Lee, Chang Dae; Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Human SciencesThis rapid systematic review evaluates the current literature on occupational therapy interventions aimed at improving ADL independence in post-stroke individuals. 28 studies were evaluated and 6 categories (task-oriented training, virtual reality and video games, technology, constraint-induced movement therapy, electrical stimulation, and other) of interventions were identified. The 28 articles used in this rapid systematic review were retrieved from PubMed and CINAHL using Covidence. Literature included are publications from the past 10 years, studies with participants 60+ years of age that have experienced a stroke, and studies with interventions focused on ADL independence. Level IV and V studies were excluded. TOT, CIMT/mCIMT, technology, E-stim, VR and virtual reality, sensory interventions, ankle-foot orthoses, and strategy training are evidence-based stroke interventions that have been showing improvement in ADL participation when compared to the standard of care. Findings reveal overall moderately strong evidence for the impact of the identified occupational therapy interventions on ADL performance for adults 60+ post-stroke. The current review supports six categories of interventions that improve ADL independence, which informs occupational therapy practice for older adult stroke patients.Item Adolescent Substance Use and Occupational Therapy Interventions: A Rapid Systematic Review(2021-05-05) Byrn, Hannah; Davila, Danielle; Green, Samantha; Kendall, Mary; Larson, Sydney; Prentice, Alexandra; Chase, Anthony; Petrenchik, Terry; Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Human SciencesThis rapid systematic review analyzes the evidence for substance use reduction through therapeutic interventions and activities in adolescents between the ages of 13-25, along with the potential for implementation in the field of occupational therapy. Adolescents with substance use disorders (SUDs) often have specific challenges regarding their family interactions, cultural beliefs, school engagement, and community support. It can be difficult for adolescents with SUDs to successfully navigate their ever changing lives, as they may also present with comorbid psychiatric conditions. It is noted that throughout this review, many interventions were the first of their kind and focused on targeting adolescents within the contexts of their environment. Many studies utilized specific techniques aimed at improving adolescents’ intrinsic beliefs regarding their substance use. Overall, low to moderate evidence was found for the effectiveness of various interventions to reduce adolescent substance use. More exhaustive research is needed to evaluate the usefulness of these interventions, as many were done in very specific settings with very individualized populations. Moreover, occupational therapists should be cautious before implementation into practice, as none of the studies evaluated explicitly examined the role of occupational therapy. More investigation is required to determine how these interventions can be applied to the field of occupational therapy.Item Assessment institute insights: A report of the STEM education track of the 2017 Assessment Institute(Assessment Update, 2018) Chase, AnthonyItem Beyond content knowledge: transferable skills connected to experience as a peer-leader in a PLTL program and long-term impacts(Springer, 2020) Chase, Anthony; Rao, Anusha S.; Lakmala, Prathima; Varma-Nelson, Pratibha; Chemistry and Chemical Biology, School of ScienceBackground Being a successful peer-led team learning (PLTL) workshop leader involves developing content knowledge and workshop facilitation skills. These skills connected to being a peer leader, however, do not terminate at the end of one’s undergraduate program. In fact, many former peer leaders denote having been a peer leader on their LinkedIn profile. This study examines the transferable skills that former peer leaders identified as being valuable in their current positions. We conducted semi-structured interviews with former peer leaders from varying disciplines, universities, ages, and years since being a peer leader. Results Interview questions captured leadership experiences including successes and challenges of being peer leaders, roles and responsibilities, and specific transferable skills further developed by being peer leaders and how they are being utilized in the leaders’ current position. Conclusion Thematic analyses of these interviews indicate that former peer leaders recognize leadership skills, coping with many challenges (including not having the right answer), collaboration/teamwork skills, self-confidence, and problem-solving skills as being relevant and frequently used in their current work.Item Comparing Narrative-Informed Occupational Therapy in Adult Outpatient Mental Health to Treatment as Usual: A Quasi-Experimental Feasibility Study with Preliminary Treatment Outcomes(Taylor & Francis, 2021) Wasmuth, Sally; Wilburn, Victoria G.; Hamm, Jay A.; Chase, Anthony; Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Human SciencesThis paper describes implementation of narrative-informed occupation-based service delivery in outpatient community mental health that addresses (1) the need for outcome data on occupational therapy in this setting, (2) an ongoing mental health provider shortage, and (3) a need for innovative approaches to supporting mental health. We found a significant improvement from baseline to post-intervention in occupational participation. Dose of occupational therapy was significantly related to improvements in roles, habits, values, long-term goals, social environment, and readiness for change. This study supports future, larger effectiveness studies of narrative-informed occupation-based intervention delivered by occupational therapists in outpatient community mental health.Item Doctoral Capstone Report: Educational Videos for the REAL-T Research Study Through USC(2021-04-16) Harris, Mary G.; Chase, Anthony; Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Human Sciences; Pyatak, ElizabethThe purpose of the capstone project was to provide the capstone student with beyond entry level skills, knowledge, and experience relating to research. Additionally, the capstone student was to create three video resources for the Lifestyle Redesign for Chronic Conditions Lab (LRCC) at the University of Southern California (USC), where the capstone project was virtually completed. The capstone student measured the progression of their goals through weekly reflections and a Qualtrics survey to analyze the perceived benefits of the videos they created. The capstone student successfully completed both goals of their project by the end of their 14 week rotation. This paper will further outline the need for the project, the available literature on the subject, the process and implementation of the project, the evaluation of the project, and the sustainability of the capstone project moving forward.Item Effectiveness of Occupational Therapy Interventions to Promote Social Participation and Quality of Life in Older Adults: A Rapid Systematic Review(2021-05-05) Adams, Alexa; Horsford, Caitlin; Jones, Paige; Long, Ryane; Pflugradt, Dana; Chase, Anthony; Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Human SciencesThis systematic review discusses the evidence of 24 studies to identify the effectiveness of various evidence-based interventions that could be utilized within the scope of occupational therapy (OT), as they aim to improve social participation and health related quality of life in adults over 60 years of age. Older adults often experience difficulty with social engagement, increasing their risk for social isolation which is correlated to decreases in health-related quality of life, functional mobility, as well as increased loneliness, cognitive declines, or other adverse physical and psychological effects. Social participation can facilitate increased health-related quality of life, mitigate loneliness, as well as slow cognitive decline and other adverse physical and psychological effects related to aging and late life transitions. Overall, this review found strong evidence for the effectiveness of physical activity interventions, moderate evidence for the effectiveness of emotional and personal based interventions, and mixed evidence for external support interventions that aim to improve social participation in older adults. Additional research should be conducted to further identify objective aspects (rather than typical subjective aspects) of evidence-based interventions that clinically correlate to increased health-related quality of life and well-being as related to social participation for therapeutic utilization within the domain of occupational therapy for older adults.Item Effects of Virtual and Augmented Reality on Occupational Performance in Children with Cerebral Palsy: A Systematic Review(2023-05-04) Shin, Christina; Brown, Katelyn; Ridgeway, Mariah; Ueki, Mio; Chase, Anthony; Sego, Daniel; Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Human SciencesCerebral palsy (CP) is a non-progressive and permanent motor disability that affects the development of movement and posture due to abnormal brain development or damage to an immature brain. It often presents with motor, cognitive, sensory, and behavioral impairments that limit occupational performance and quality of life. CP affects about two to three children in every 1,000 live births, making it the most common motor disability in childhood (Metin et al., 2013). Virtual and augmented reality (V&AR) has emerged as an innovative therapeutic intervention that targets motor and cognitive rehabilitation in children with CP through its task-oriented, interactive, and intensive training system. However, there has been limited research on its effectiveness in the CP population due to its novelty and variety of interventions available. In this systematic review, a comprehensive literature review of 20 studies was conducted to evaluate the effects of V&AR on occupational performance in children with CP. The results of this review support the use of V&AR interventions in expanding and guiding rehabilitative practitioners who work with children with CP.Item Engineering and Informatics Student Multidisciplinary Learning using 3D Visualization and 3D Display of Radio Frequency (RF) Concepts(IEEE, 2018-10) Christopher, Lauren; William, Albert; Rao, Anusha S.; Dale, Ashley; Chase, Anthony; Joshi, Mihir Piyush; Krogg, Wendy; Abernathy, Bree; Electrical and Computer Engineering, School of Engineering and TechnologyThis full paper addresses the Innovative Practice Category. We discuss our multidisciplinary approach to create a truly 3D representation and 3D display of RF signals in space through the development of two different training tools to enhance student understanding of Radio Communications. Both tools show the data on 3D autostereoscopic displays rather than rendered back to 2D displays. The first new tool is a series of 3D stereoscopic animations created by a multidisciplinary team of students from the Media Arts and Sciences (School of Informatics) and Electrical Engineering (School of Engineering) programs for use with an autostereoscopic display, where each animation focuses on a single topic within RF communication learning, using real-world examples. The second innovative tool models the Navy use-case of Electronic Warfare (EW) using examples with 3D antenna radiation patterns of signal propagation using U.S. Navy's SIMDIS interactive 3D visualization environment. The developed scenarios are displayed on an autostereoscopic display, allowing students to manipulate RF signals in a 3D environment. Learning gains were assessed via a 2x2 crossover experimental design an engineering student group. Compared to the control group, students showed gains in understanding of the 3D shape of dipole antennas and understanding of the multiple RF antennas in a cell phone, and the connections between mobile phone antennas and cell towers. The results from these interventions collectively indicate that a truly 3D representation in space can be used to enhance students' understanding of antennas and RF signals.Item Enhancing Recovery: Occupational Therapy for Adults with Traumatic Brain Injury, A Rapid Systematic Review(2024-04-24) Findley, Caroline; Grove, Dara; John, Andrea; Lenk, Lauren; Martinez, Adriana; Tinnin, Morémi; Chase, Anthony; Lee, Chang Dae; Department of Occupational Therapy, School of Health and Human SciencesA thorough systematic analysis was conducted to find effective interventions for people with traumatic brain injuries (TBI) who are 18 years of age and older. This review gives an overview and discussion of 30 studies focused on various interventions classified into the following categories: group-based approach, memory and planning, social participation, and emotional and behavioral regulation. The objective of the rapid systematic review (RSR) was to search the literature and critically appraise findings to address what evidence is available regarding interventions to promote psychosocial wellness, executive functioning, and occupational engagement in adults with TBI. Technology and group-based approaches were effective in improving psychosocial outcomes, however within clinical research there is a lack of OTP researchers and interventions designed to address longevity of recovery.
