Abstract
This brief analyzes supervision shortages in Indiana’s behavioral health workforce. It distinguishes between field supervision during degree programs and clinical supervision required for licensure. Survey data show significant gaps: 44% of professionals struggled with practicum requirements and 35% with finding post-graduation supervisors. Fewer than 20% of licensed professionals currently supervise, with barriers including lack of incentives, workflow disruptions, and poor coordination. Rural areas face the greatest shortages. The report outlines regulatory requirements, recent policy changes such as virtual supervision, and recommends financial incentives, workflow integration, improved communication, and targeted rural strategies to strengthen the workforce pipeline.
