Item 16 Years of Charitable Giving Research(2019-12-12) Osili, Una; Clark, Chelsea; Han, XiaoThe underlying data for this research brief is drawn from the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy’s Philanthropy Panel Study (PPS)—a signature research project of the school. The PPS, formerly known as the Center on Philanthropy Panel Study (COPPS), follows the same families’ philanthropic behaviors throughout their lives. The study provides nonprofit sector professionals, fundraisers, policymakers and public officials a unique perspective of household giving and volunteering behaviors over time.Item Another BRIC on the web: the Brazilian presence in international agency statistical sites(2015-06-16) Colson, HaroldProvides a brief recap of Brazilian statistical coverage in major and specialty international government organizations outside of Latin America, with a deeper report on the surprisingly strong set of Brazil data and economic analysis provided by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). The OECD covers "key partner" Brazil and other BRIC countries with special interest.Item Community Health Information Resource Guide: Volume 1 - Data(The Polis Center at IUPUI, 2011-06) Comer, Karen F; Derr, Michelle; Seyffarth, Chris; Thomaskutty, Champ; Kandris, Sharon; Ritchey, MatthewThis resource guide contains useful information for those who would like to use data to assess the health status of an Indiana community. Targeted users include local organizations such as county health departments and community health coalitions. Being able to access and use relevant data and information resources is a common hurdle for those interested in assessing and advancing community health. As a result of this need and at the request of the Community Advisory Council of the Community Health Engagement Program, we developed this resource guide to assist individuals, organizations, and coalitions in Indiana in identifying appropriate resources that guide their community health research and evaluation activities. The term “data” is used in this volume in reference to both data and information sources. While data consist of raw facts and figures, information is formed by analyzing the data and applying knowledge to it so that the findings are more meaningful and valuable to the community. The benefit of using data is that you can often manipulate it for your specific purposes. The benefit of using information sources is that the work of generating meaning from the data might already have been done, while a potential downside is that the available sources might not answer your specific questions. There are diverse sources of data that can be used as a basis for community health evaluation and decision making. Those looking to use data must consider multiple factors before determining the appropriate data to seek and use.Item The Open Access Divide(2013-10) Xia, JingfengThis paper is an attempt to review various aspects of the open access divide regarding the difference between those academics who support free sharing of data and scholarly output and those academics who do not. It provides a structured description by adopting the Ws doctrines emphasizing such questions as who, what, when, where and why for information-gathering. Using measurable variables to define a common expression of the open access divide, this study collects aggregated data from existing open access as well as non-open access publications including journal articles and extensive reports. The definition of the open access divide is integrated into the discussion of scholarship on a larger scale.Item Overdose Data to Action: Limiting Overdose through Collaborative Actions in Localities (OD2A: LOCAL)(2024-10) Greene, Marion; Sanner, Lindsey; Gutta, Jyotsna; Williamson, Curtis; McNamee, CassidyIn the fall of 2023, the Marion County Public Health Department (MCPHD) was awarded the federal Overdose Data to Action: Limiting Overdose through Collaborative Actions in Localities (OD2A: LOCAL) grant. This 5-year initiative by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) supports local jurisdictions in addressing the overdose crisis through surveillance and evidence-based prevention and harm reduction strategies, with the overarching goal to reduce drug overdoses and health inequities. To achieve this goal, MCPHD funds and collaborates with 16 community organizations (subawardees).Item PurpleAir Data(2022) Heintzelman, AsrahItem STEALTH-LIKE COMMUNICATION WITHIN IMAGES(Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research, 2012-04-13) Miranda, Jose H.; King, BrianEmbedded communication techniques within an image have be-come increasingly important in the area of digital communication. Such techniques include: steganography, covert channels, anonymity, and copyright marking. The focus of this research is developing a se-ries of experiments with an applied technique of steganography knowledge in order to protect the information being hidden through the image. This technique allows this stealth-like communication be confidential such that only those that possess authentication can read or interpret the data behind the image. In order for this authentication to work a user is granted a key, which allows the decoding of the data scattered around the different pixels of the image. Short-term goals of this project include setting different parameters of the location of the message such as fixed places of the data and fixed number of pixels. Long-term goals is to implement a smartphone communication sys-tem that utilizes this technique being developed in order to enhance this type of stealth-like communication.Item Text mining of online book reviews for non-trivial clustering of books and users(2013-08-14) Lin, Eric; Fang, Shiaofen; Mukhopadhyay, Snehasis; Du, Yingzi, 1975-The classification of consumable media by mining relevant text for their identifying features is a subjective process. Previous attempts to perform this type of feature mining have generally been limited in scope due having limited access to user data. Many of these studies used human domain knowledge to evaluate the accuracy of features extracted using these methods. In this thesis, we mine book review text to identify nontrivial features of a set of similar books. We make comparisons between books by looking for books that share characteristics, ultimately performing clustering on the books in our data set. We use the same mining process to identify a corresponding set of characteristics in users. Finally, we evaluate the quality of our methods by examining the correlation between our similarity metric, and user ratings.Item The Indiana INSPECT Evaluation: Key Findings and Recommendations from a Descriptive Analysis of INSPECT Data(Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, 2014-09) Kooreman, Harold; Greene, Marion; Xavier-Brier, Marik; Wright, EricThe purpose of this report is to provide a descriptive analysis of 2011-2013 INSPECT data. Most of the controlled substances dispensed in the observed time period were opioids, especially hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen combinations (e.g., Vicodin). Benzodiazepines also contributed to a large portion of dispensations. Potential doctor-shoppers were more likely to be younger and had filled a higher number of opioid prescriptions than individuals characterized as non-shoppers. More dispensations of opioid analgesics were attributable to MDs than any other profession with prescription privileges.Item Using Data to Identify Substance Abuse Prevention Needs - Development of a Substance Abuse Priority Index(Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, 2013-05) Greene, Marion; Wright, EricSubstance abuse continues to be a public health concern in Indiana and nationwide. The abuse of alcohol and other drugs may not only result in negative health outcomes but are often a key issue in the criminal justice system, either directly (e.g., possession or sale/manufacture of illicit substances) or indirectly (e.g., crimes committed while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or to support drug-seeking behaviors). The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services declared substance abuse stance abuse can differ by county.
