Item Asian American women's perspectives on donating healthy breast tissue: implications for recruitment methods and messaging(2016-12) Ridley-Merriweather, Katherine E.; Parrish-Sprowl, John; Bute, Jennifer J.; Head, Katharine J.Asian women have a lower risk than Caucasians, African Americans, and Latinas of developing breast cancer (BC). Yet, once Asians move to the U.S. their risk rates measurably increase. The Susan G. Komen® Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center (KTB), the only biobank of its kind in the world, collects healthy breast tissue from women of all racial groups to use as controls in BC research. The KTB represents a critical tool in efforts to treat and prevent BC; however, Asian American (AA) women display marked reticence towards donating tissue to the KTB. The purpose of this study is to use the basic components of Grounded Practical Theory to explore potential messaging that may result in AAs’ more positive outlook on breast tissue donation. This study recruited seventeen (N=17) AA women to share their perspectives on donating breast tissue for research purposes. Participants took part in an interactive focus group exploring potential messaging for successfully recruiting AA women to the KTB study. Findings revealed that: a) participants retained a culturally-embedded discomfort with donating, and a general distrust that their donation would be handled ethically and appropriately; b) the women possessed an extraordinary need for knowledge about all facets of the donation process; c) participants perceived that they lack a personal connection to BC, making it difficult for them to generate any truly altruistic tendencies to perform the desired behavior, or to understand a need to do so; and d) they possess a strong desire to learn why it seems important to the KTB to collect their tissue, and especially about the increased BC rates and risk for Asians who move to or are born in the U.S. The findings from this study have important implications for others who work in applied clinical settings and are interested in addressing racial disparities in medical research through more effective and targeted recruitment messaging.Item Examining recollections of Black women with breast cancer who participated in clinical trials: A grounded practical theory study of patient-provider communication(Elsevier, 2024-11-25) Ridley-Merriweather, Katherine E.; Okoruwa, Oseme Precious; Vogel, Katherine; Medicine, School of MedicineThe presence of strong barriers to research participation for Black women is indisputable. However, existing evidence supports the possibility of equal levels of participation among members of minoritized populations in past breast cancer (BC) clinical trials (CTs), demonstrating that while these participation barriers undoubtedly exist but are not insurmountable. This work aims to investigate patient-provider conversations to try to illuminate how providers can better engage Black women in communication that will positively influence their perceptions of breast cancer clinical trial participation. Fourteen women (N = 14) who self-identified as Black, Black American, or African American and who had previously or were currently involved in a BC CT participated in the grounded theory-guided study. These women were recruited through emails and social media platforms and interviewed regarding their communication with their medical providers and their pathway to CT participation. Findings revealed three primary categories: 1) participants reported the following provider types as most effective communicators: attentive, matter-of-fact, warm, or above-and beyond; 2) participants frequently received no information about CTs from their providers; and 3) cultural constructs including faith, word of mouth, and storytelling are important to the recruitment of these Black women to BC CTs. Our findings demonstrate the importance of healthcare providers adjusting their communication to meet one of the preferred provider archetypes of communication styles, understanding and incorporating cultural constructs in their communication, and providing information about BC CTs to Black women. Through improved patient-provider communication, healthcare providers may positively influence Black women's perceptions of and participation in BC CTs.Item Exploring How the Terms “Black” and “African American” May Shape Health Communication Research(Taylor & Francis, 2021) Ridley-Merriweather, Katherine E.; Hoffmann-Longtin, Krista; Owusu, Raiven K.; Communication Studies, School of Liberal ArtsSeveral distinct terms are used to identify descendants of the African diaspora (DADs) as fellow members of a racialized population. However, “Black” and “African American” are the two labels most commonly used. Given the recent calls for examining institutionalized racism in the United States, health scholars must contemplate the problems that may arise when these two terms are used interchangeably, namely the extent to which mislabeling may reify already significant health disparities. This essay examines the histories and meanings of “Black” and “African American” as identity labels and explores their importance in relationship to the effective recruitment of DADs to health research and clinical trials. In this paper, we employ the communication theory of identity and critical race theory as lenses to call attention to the discursive challenges associated with recruitment of DADs in health research. We also encourage health communication scholars to explore and extend the scope of this research. We do this by first describing the unintended consequences in health research through disregard of DADs’ chosen identity labels. We then use the various terms to describe DADs to illuminate existing tensions between “Black” and “African American.” We describe how each moniker is used and perceived, broadly and in health contexts. Finally, we call for more research into the effects of mislabeling and propose a plan for researchers’ next steps.Item A novel qualitative approach for identifying effective communication for recruitment of minority women to a breast cancer prevention study(Elsevier, 2022-03-18) Ridley-Merriweather, Katherine E.; Head, Katharine J.; Younker, Stephanie M.; Evans, Madeline D.; Moore, Courtney M.; Lindsey, Deidre S.; Wu, Cynthia Y.; Wiehe, Sarah E.; Communication Studies, School of Liberal ArtsEnsuring that racial and ethnic minority women are involved in breast cancer research is important to address well-documented current disparities in cancer incidence, stages of diagnosis, and mortality rates. This study used a novel interactive focus group method to identify innovative communication strategies for recruiting women from two minority groups—Latinas and Asian Americans—into the Komen Tissue Bank, a specific breast cancer biobank clinical trial. Through activities that employed visual interactive tools to facilitate group discussion and self-reflection, the authors examined perspectives and motivations for Asian American women (N = 17) and Latinas (N = 14) toward donating their healthy breast tissue. Findings included three themes that, while common to both groups, were unique in how they were expressed: lack of knowledge concerning breast cancer risks and participation in clinical research, cultural influences in BC risk thinking, and how altruism relates to perceived personal connection to breast cancer. More significantly, this study illuminated the importance of using innovative methods to encourage deeper, more enlightened participation among underrepresented populations that may not arise in a traditional focus group format.
