Item Analysis of public library users’ digital preservation practices(2011-05) Copeland, Andrea J.This research investigated preservation practices of personal digital information by public library users. This qualitative study used semistructured interviews and two visual representation techniques, information source horizons and matrices, for data collection. The constant comparison method and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. A model emerged which describes the effects of social, cognitive, and affective influences on personal preservation decisions as well as the effects of fading cognitive associations and technological advances, combined with information escalation over time. Because the preservation of personal digital information involves personal, social, and technological interactions, the integration of these factors is necessary for a viable solution to the digital preservation problem.Item The Bethel AME Church Archive: Partners and Participants(Facet Publishing, 2017) Copeland, Andrea J.Community archives have proven vital for giving a voice to underrepresented groups. Formal institutional archives have traditionally represented the dominant narrative in society and continue to do so, excluding access to cultural records and artifacts of underrepresented groups. Well-funded cultural heritage institutions have the infrastructures of support to provide long-term preservation and access on a global scale. Connecting community archives to this infrastructure of support is the overarching goal of my research (Copeland, 2015). How to make that connection in a way that respects the community and the purpose of the archive remains to be determined. Gregory.Item Collection Management and the Budget Crunch: Are We Adequately Preparing Library Students for Current Practices?(2013-06) Hedlund, Olivia; Copeland, Andrea J.Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to determine whether collection management practices that evolved as a result of recent budgetary constraints are included in the LIS curriculum or not. Design/methodology/approach – Ten collection management trends related to budgetary constraints were identified through a review of the literature. Then, collection management educators at ALISE member institutions were identified and surveyed regarding the inclusion of the aforementioned trends in their curricula. Survey results were analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. Findings – Four trends (collaborative collection development, just-in-time acquisitions, patron-driven-acquisitions, and participation in consortia) were mentioned in nearly all curricula; six others were covered with varying frequency. Professional standards are also found to include limited information on collection management. Additionally, a review of two popular collection development texts revealed that very few of the trends were covered in a budgetary context. Originality/value – This study examines collection management education in a novel way and highlights the disconnect between professional practice, professional standards, and education. The paper also adds the domain of collection development to the discussion of how or why LIS courses are influenced by practice.Item Creating a Knowledge Base: Analyzing a Veteran Reference Librarian's Brain(2006) Early, Charles; Copeland, Andrea J.; Endres, SarahVirtual reference transactions provided a solution to a knowledge-management problem at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Library. Online reference services, real-time and e-mail, allow for the development of a knowledge base. One hundred e-mail question-and-answer pairs were analyzed to reveal the steps taken and the sources used by a soon-to-retire librarian. A guide to the information sources and producers at Goddard was created. Given the dynamic nature of information at Goddard, a database built on the Apache, MySQL, PHP (AMP) open source platform was designed for the guide. The resource is now dynamic and can continue to grow with input from all Goddard's librarians.Item Diagrams and Relational Maps: The Use of Graphic Elicitation Techniques with Interviewing for Data Collection, Analysis, and Display(2012) Copeland, Andrea J.; Agosto, Denise EGraphic elicitation techniques, which ask research participants to provide visual data representing personal understandings of concepts, experiences, beliefs, or behaviors, can be especially useful in helping participants to express complex or abstract ideas or opinions. The benefits and drawbacks of using graphic elicitation techniques for data collection, data analysis, and data display in qualitative research studies are analyzed using examples from a research study that employed data matrices and relational maps in conjunction with semi-structured interviews. Results from this analysis demonstrate that the use of these combined techniques for data collection facilitates triangulation and helps to establish internal consistency of data, thereby increasing the trustworthiness of the interpretation of that data and lending support to validity and reliability claims. Findings support the notion that graphic elicitation techniques can be highly useful in qualitative research studies at the data collection, the data analysis, and the data reporting stages. For example, this study found that graphic elicitation techniques are especially useful for eliciting data related to emotions and emotional experiences.Item E-Book versus Print A Per-Title Cost and Use Comparison of a Public Library’s Popular Titles(2012-06) Gray, David J; Copeland, Andrea J.Electronic books, or e-books, are a major topic of discussion for public libraries across the country. Two-thirds of public libraries report they now provide access to e-books. However, limited research exists on e-books in public libraries. This study examines e-book usage and cost in a public library by comparing the most popular electronic format to print format by title to discover if e-book and print copies of the same title circulate at similar rates. The title for title, print book and e-book comparison showed that on average the highest circulating e-books circulated at the same rate as the first print copy. A cost comparison found comparable average prices of popular book titles in both print and electronic format as well as the cost per circulation of print and e-books.Item Electronic Collection Management and Electronic Information Services(copyright 2005 - IOS Press and the authors. These changes have brought new strategies and methods as well as new issues and challenges. At the bottom line the services are increasingly delivered to a desktop from distributed publishers or information providers. Information organizations act either as primary information providers or as brokers between the user and the primary service provider. This paper covers developments in the factors and strategies affecting collection management and access. It discusses major trends in electronic user services including electronic information delivery, information discovery and electronic reference. Finally, it addresses the challenges in user and personnel education in response to this electronic environment and an increasingly information literate user population.Item A Framework for Text Processing and Supporting Access to Collections of Digitized Historical Newspapers(2007) Allen, Robert B; Copeland, Andrea J.; Achananuparp, Palakorn; Lee, Ki JungLarge quantities of historical newspapers are being digitized and OCRd. We describe a framework for processing the OCRd text to identify articles and extract metadata for them. We describe the article schema and provide examples of features that facilitate automatic indexing of them. For this processing, we employ lexical semantics, structural models, and community content. Few opportunities exist where they can learn from each other’s expertise. How can we better bridge this gap between theory and practice? Discover how librarians, SLIS faculty, and SLIS students at one institution created a joint research conference as a means of formally sharing and discussing their research. Learn how this conference expanded their professional growth.
