Hello. This is doctor Wendy Miller from the IU School of Nursing, an associate professor there, and I just wanted to talk about my research for just a couple of minutes. And my research is really focused on improving self management and quality of life of people living with chronic diseases and specifically epilepsy. And I and my team have worked really intensely on using big data for that purpose. So a big portion of my research is not just building interventions that will improve the skills and confidence of people to manage their chronic diseases, but using user created data, patient generated data to form those programs. So on the screen, you can see her as an example, a database called Chacha. We did some machine learning on that database to find out what are people with epilepsy talking about in the social media realm. And it really helped to show us that people are talking about issues that we weren't aware of using traditional research methods. So I've used a lot of traditional research methods like qualitative interviews, surveys, different psychometric tools to evaluate things. And those are have some really good benefits, but there are some, non benefits to that that we don't have when we use social media. So social media is a very large dataset that is organically generated by patients. So it's not filtered through a researcher, me asking a question. It's genuinely what the patient is concerned about. So that's just a little bit about my research. We use that information then to inform the development of interventions to help people with things that they are really concerned about leading to better health outcomes. So that's the gist of my research. I do a lot more too, but that's the short end of it. If you are interested, you can find my contact information below.
