Hello. My name is Chrystal Martin, and I'm associate professor in the School of Education and an adjunct associate Professor in Africana Studies at Indiana University, Indianapolis. I am a community engaged scholar, committed to creating spaces that center practices that value and respect the humanity of all individuals, specifically the humanity of black women and girls. One of the broad things of my work is prioritizing, nurturing, enriching and listic mathematics and stem based learning experiences for black girls and their families. I seek to understand how these experiences impact black girls stem identity development and their overall development. In 2013, I founded Girlte Institute as an inclusive and transformative informal stem learning space for black girls and other girls from historically marginalized groups and their families. I created this space to counter the negative and oppressive experiences they have in traditional learning spaces. The pills of Girlste Institute are career exploration and exposure, critical consciousness, girl empowerment, and holistic enrichment. As a scholar, GSI at I UI serves as a space for my research, teaching, and service, and I am truly grateful to have the opportunity to do this work. Thank you.
