Hello. I'm Genevieve Shaker. I'm an associate professor of Philanthropic Studies in the I U Lily Family School of Philanthropy at IUPUI. Did you know that Americans gave $470,000,000,000 to charitable causes last year? Did you also know that almost all of those gifts came after someone asked them to give? This is the point where my research is centered at that moment of giving. We know a lot about why donors give, their motivations, their behaviors, but we really don't know very much about fundraisers, and we have a lot to learn about fund raising. In my work, I study fundraisers and I study the philanthropic relationships that they form with donors that are part of that gift process. I'm hoping that my work will not only inform scholarly understandings and inspire future research, but also that nonprofits can use it and fundraisers will make use of it too to help them in their work as they raise money for these important charitable causes. I work to make sure that my research gets out to people working in the field, by teaching, professional education, by writing, in public venues, and by editing books like achieving excellence in fundraising. I'm so pleased to be able to do this as a part of my role here at IUPUI.
