Questions such as the role of art and its relationship to race and racial privilege. And the relationships power implicated in the control and use of public space are both local and compelling. And to understand this, you always need to examine their broader contexts, particularly the history of Indianapolis politics, and also more broadly, discourses of race and representation nationally. A second premise of the conversations that lead us to organize this symposium is divergent perspectives are critical to a productive, meaningful conversation. Historical perspectives or aesthetically based, that each of these brings valuable insights into these complex questions. Today. Dr. Ogden is Professor of Architectural History, the Department of Art History at UCLA. He's written broadly about the American built environment and its significance within the social, political, and historical contexts.
