Hi. I'm doctor Nir Menachemi. I'm a professor and Chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management at the IU Fairbank School of Public Health. And I'm doctor Katherine Head. I'm an associate professor in the Department of Communication Studies in the IU School of Ober Arts. Ow project is titled What is motivating parents COVID 19 vaccine decisions? A statewide survey of Indiana Parents. The COVID 19 vaccine is already available to children over 12-years-old, and it will soon be available for school aged children aged five to 11-years-old. We wanted to understand who's your parents' perceptions of the COVID 19 vaccine and assess their intentions to get their children vaccinated. This information can assist state and local governments, public health agencies, and community organizations in designing parent and family focused interventions to ensure that we have high vaccination uptake among our children. So in the late spring, we worked with both the Indiana Department of Health and the Indiana Department of Education to recruit parents and caregivers across the state to fill out a web based survey that assessed their perceptions about the COVID 19 vaccine. Over 10,000 parents filled out the anonymous survey. Some of the key findings include that only about 45% of parents have or intend to vaccinate their children. All about 42% do not intend to do so. In the middle, we had about 13% of parents who said that they wanted to wait and see. And of those that were waiting and see, we found some interesting perceptions about the vaccine that may suggest ways that we can develop targeted educational messages to hopefully encourage them to get vaccinated, such as perceptions about the safety of the vaccine, perceptions of what parents thought other parents were doing, and perceptions of what parents thought their healthcare provider wanted them to do. Based on these findings, we've developed a set of evidence based recommendations and suggestions for designing parent and family focused COVID 19 vaccination interventions that can be implemented across communities in the State of Indiana. We look forward to getting together with all of you at the Church showcase and diving deeper into this work.
